Holiday apartment in Borsellino: Astronomy, Murals and Olive Culture
Joppolo Giancaxio and Contrada Borsellino combine astronomy and earth sciences with church art, murals, nature trails, olive culture and Sicilian cuisine. Science, visible art, outdoor activities and regional products give the municipality several clearly distinct themes.
Planetario di Agrigento: Astronomy, Earth Sciences and Dome
The Planetario di Agrigento is located in Contrada Borsellino within the municipality of Joppolo Giancaxio, a few kilometres from Agrigento. The astronomy museum was inaugurated in March 2019. The approximately 300-square-metre museum and exhibition centre for astronomy and earth sciences is aimed at the general public and schools. These topics are presented in the science museum; the exhibition area displays photographs and explanatory information sheets. The dome has a diameter of 6 metres. There are 50 seats available for school visits. Private visits are also offered, as are group visits for at least 10 people, in both cases by prior reservation.
Chiesa Madre, Murals and Ducal Castle
The Chiesa Madre San Francesco di Paola was built in the 17th century and designed in the Neoclassical style. The murals in Joppolo Giancaxio transform building façades and streets into open-air art galleries; their motifs tell stories, evoke emotions and honour the local culture and its traditions. Access to the Castello ducale di Joppolo Giancaxio, on the other hand, is not always guaranteed, as the property may be privately owned or may only be opened on special occasions. Thus, the visible murals differ from the castle's possible event-based access.
Nature Trails and Il Boschetto Adventure Park
Joppolo Giancaxio offers trekking and mountain biking on nature trails. These two activities make use of the network of nature trails, while Il Boschetto Adventure Park offers high-ropes and acrobatic courses. Reservations are required for the activities and use of the equipped area in the adventure park. The nature trails and the equipped park area therefore represent two different forms of active daytime activities: outdoors on trekking or mountain-biking routes and on the permanently installed courses at Il Boschetto.
Santa Oliva, Mangia e Passia and Regional Cuisine
Santa Oliva offers a tasting tour of the oil mill and the olive groves of Azienda Agricola Russo in Contrada Borsellino. Every year, Joppolo Giancaxio celebrates the olive harvest and the production of new extra virgin olive oil. In June, Mangia e Passia also takes place as a street food festival featuring typical local products and Sicilian street-food specialities. Agriturismo Reggia Saracena has a restaurant with 60 seats serving traditional regional cuisine. The culinary offerings therefore range from a tour of an oil mill and its groves to the festival in June and the restaurant serving regional cuisine.
