Nulvi: Candelieri Tradition and Archaeological Traces

Nulvi combines religious traditions with archaeological traces and several churches in the town center. The Candelieri festival, the quiet Good Friday custom, and the rural churches outside the built-up area each reveal a different aspect of local culture. There is also the Irru archaeological complex, about one kilometer east of Nulvi. Candelieri and Religious Traditions

According to experts, the Candelieri festival in Nulvi is considered one of the island’s oldest festivals. Visitors can take part directly. The Candelieri are kept throughout the year in the currently deconsecrated church of San Filippo Neri. The oratory of San Filippo Neri also houses the carrying frames known as “Sos Candhaleris.” Thus, the Candelieri theme centers on the festival, the Candelieri kept there, and the named carrying frames.

During Holy Week, Nulvi’s Good Friday customs include sas Chircas mudas, a silent search for Mary. By contrast, visitors can take part directly in the Candelieri festival; the two customs therefore have different emphases.

Festival Days and Traditional Clothing

Sa ‘Essida de sos Candhaleris is a religious festival held in Nulvi in August. Nulvi has also preserved much of its traditional clothing for women and men. It is worn on solemn religious occasions and at folk events. The tradition therefore extends beyond religious celebrations and also includes folk events.

Archaeology at Irru

The Irru archaeological complex lies about one kilometer east of Nulvi. It includes a nuraghe and a limestone well temple dating from the 10th to the 7th century BC; it also includes a village and tombs. This period gives the structures a clear chronological framework. With its village and tombs, the archaeological complex also extends beyond individual structures and offers several aspects to explore when learning about Irru.

Churches in and Outside the Town Center

Notable churches in the town center include Nostra Signora del Rosario, San Giovanni, and Santa Croce. Cunventu de subra, with the church of San Bonaventura, and Cunventu de Josso, with the church of Santa Tecla, are also notable places in the center. The San Bonaventura monastic complex includes a church and a former Franciscan monastery. Locals know it as su cunventu ‘e subra, “the upper monastery”; the name distinguishes it from another monastery in the lower part of town.

Outside Nulvi’s built-up area are the rural churches of Sant’Antonio Abate and the Church of the Holy Spirit. The ruins of San Lussorio and San Michele are also located there. Churches and historic sites can therefore be found not only in the town center: outside the built-up area, rural churches and ruins provide further cultural highlights.
