Rock Landscapes and Natural Attractions
Su Sterru on the Golgo has been a natural monument and tourist attraction since 1993. The opening has a diameter of 25 metres and widens to 40 metres at the bottom. Su Sterru can be reached on foot through a landscape of lava flows over limestone, ferns, moss-covered holm oaks and small ponds. Along its galleries and walkways, the Grotta del Fico features stalactites, stalagmites and columns; the paths run above the fossil bed of an ancient river.
The rural church of Chiesa di San Lussorio also offers a special insight into the surrounding area: It was built in the 17th century, lies three kilometres below Baunei near the small village of Ardali, which belongs to the municipality of Triei, and is easily accessible from Baunei via the road from Usuonu.

The exceptionally clear, fish-rich waters of Cala Biriola are suitable for diving as well as swimming with a mask and snorkel. The shallow seabed of Cala Mariolu is suitable for both snorkelling and diving. At the Piscine di Venere, numerous freshwater springs along the offshore rocky coast and very light-coloured limestone on the predominantly sandy seabed contribute to the bright, clear colours.
The Villaggio Gallico climbing area has 40 climbing routes with difficulty grades ranging from 5b to 7c+. In addition, there are numerous climbing crags in the Baunei and Santa Maria Navarrese area. The Selvaggio Blu trekking route begins at Pedra Longa and ends at Cala Luna. It is suitable exclusively for experienced, well-trained hikers with good orientation skills and solid climbing knowledge.
Culture, History and Local Specialities
The parish church of Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari stands in the centre of Baunei. It was probably built in the 17th century on the ruins of an older chapel. At Genna Olidone, the remains of buildings and equipment from a mine for silver-bearing lead ore operated in the first half of the 20th century have been preserved.
Su cunfettu is a typical wedding confection from Baunei made with honey, almonds and orange peel. Sa Coua Baunesa is a traditional wedding celebration from Ogliastra that revives old traditions from Baunei. The celebrations in honour of San Pietro took place on the last Sunday in June. The Museo Etnografico Sa Dommu Eccia was open daily from May to October.
Cala Goloritzè
Since 2020, a simultaneous upper limit of 250 people has applied to Cala Goloritzè.
