Holiday apartment in Tuili: Giara, churches and bread culture
Accommodation in Tuili
Tuili combines nature, churches, museums and local festival traditions. The area includes part of the Giara, several churches and the Sagra de Su Pani Arrubiu.
Giara and nature around Tuili
The territory of Tuili includes part of the Giara, including the larger marshland of Pauli Majori and Punta Zepparedda. From Tuili, you can set out on excursions into the Giara. In the Giara associated with Tuili, visitors may encounter the famous Giara horse, hares, foxes and birds of prey. The Giara’s Pauli marshes also provide a habitat for invertebrate species whose origins date back as far as 200 million years. The Giara therefore reveals itself through several specific facets: named landscape features stand alongside marshlands and diverse wildlife. The combination of excursions, wildlife observation and the unusual timescale represented by the invertebrate species gives this natural area a distinctive profile.
Churches and museums as cultural discoveries
The Church of San Pietro in Tuili has Gothic-Catalan origins and dates from the late 15th century. In the first chapel on the right of the entrance, dedicated to Madonna del Carmine, there is an altarpiece measuring 5.5 metres high and 3.5 metres wide. The lower central panel depicts the Madonna and Child, above it is the Crucifixion, the sides show images of saints, and the predella contains scenes from the life of Saint Peter.
The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate in Tuili was built in 1582. It houses a precious Baroque wooden altar coated with fine gold and featuring four columns. Villa Asquer also offers an insight into the town’s culture: it is home to the Museo dell’Olio and the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali. Thus, in Tuili, religious art and Baroque furnishings stand alongside the museum themes of oil and musical instruments. Villa Asquer provides a different focus from the churches: oil and musical instruments are at the centre there, while the churches are defined by their altarpiece and wooden altar.
Su Pani Arrubiu and festivals in Tuili
Every year, the Sagra de Su Pani Arrubiu takes place in Tuili’s historic centre, usually on the second Sunday after Easter on the occasion of Sant’Antioco. Su Pani Arrubiu is a Civraxiu-style bread made from durum wheat flour, sourdough, raisins, orange peel and saffron. The sagra includes a demonstration of dough preparation, as well as the baking and tasting of the bread. The Festa di Sant’Antonio Abate takes place from 28 to 30 July at the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate. This documents both a local bread speciality with its ingredients and preparation steps and a religious festival date with a complete time period.
