Archaeology in the historic centre
An important starting point is the Civico Museo Archeologico Villa Abbas in Sardara’s historic centre, at Piazza Libertà. The museum is housed in a restored building dating from 1914. The exhibition, opened in 1997, extends across two floors and eight rooms. In terms of content, it takes visitors from the prehistoric and Nuragic periods through the Punic and Roman eras to the Middle Ages. This makes it possible to follow the region’s long development within a coherent cultural focus.
The second exhibition hall of the Civico Museo Archeologico Villa Abbas displays a Nuragic village and the sacred well. Both were discovered beside the Church of Santa Anastasia and later scientifically excavated. The sacred well of the Santuario di Sant'Anastasia has a circular chamber with a false domed vault. A staircase leads through a corridor covered with stone slabs to this structure.
Thermal springs and festival tradition
The Santa Maria de is Acquas valley has five thermomineral springs. The Rio Sacer runs through the valley, which is surrounded by nuraghi. In the area of the ancient Aquae Neapolitanae, Sardara also preserves the history of a Roman thermal complex connected with the thermal springs there. These springs were used therapeutically in Roman times.
The Santa Maria de is Aquas festival begins on the penultimate Monday in September and lasts for four days.
Churches, art and regional history
The Church of San Gregorio Magno dates from the first decades of the 14th century and is considered a notable example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Inside are Estofado-de-Oro wooden sculptures, an 18th-century organ and the altarpiece with wooden altar of the Madonna d’Itria from the 18th century. Castello di Monreale served both as a military fortress and as a royal residence.
Surroundings between nuraghi and mountains
The archaeological theme continues beyond the town centre. The Nuraghe Genna Maria archaeological site and the Museo Civico Archeologico Genna Maria are located in the vicinity of Sardara. The Museo Naturalistico del Territorio is also located nearby. The Area Archeologica Del Nuraghe Sa Fogaia archaeological area is likewise situated in the surroundings of Sardara. These destinations appeal to different interests: from Nuragic culture and archaeological interpretation to natural history.
The wider regional surroundings of Sardara include several mountains: Punta Trebinalonga, Perdas Urias, Bruncu de su Trigu and Punta Genna Maiori.
Town centre and regional surroundings
The SS 131 skirts Sardara and is Sardinia’s main transport artery. The archaeological area is located in the historic town centre.
