Holiday apartment in Traversella: rock carvings, mining history and mountain trails

Traversella brings together trails to rock carvings, mining heritage and mountain landscapes. The Sentiero delle Anime starts here, the Via dei Cantoni starts and ends here, and the narrow road towards Fondo offers a beautiful view of Monte Marzo. There are also rock carvings, a mining museum and a climbing area above the village. Rock carvings and trails through the mountain landscape

The Sentiero delle Anime starts in Traversella and is a self-guided trail to rock carvings. Between Rifugio Piazza and the Piani di Cappia, there are numerous very old rock carvings dating from pre-Christian times. Rifugio Bruno Piazza is located on the Sentiero delle Anime near the climbing area.

Another special feature is the Pera dij Cros on the Sentiero dei mufloni. It is a boulder with 119 rock carvings covering an area of approximately 150 m². The Sentiero dei mufloni circular trail starts in Fondo and Talorno, two hamlets with characteristic stone architecture.

The Via dei Cantoni is an approximately 26 km circular trail starting and ending in Traversella. For orientation on site, the trail runs from Piazza Cavour via Via Monte Marzo; afterwards, follow trail markers 9 or 729.

Monte Marzo, Carëtte and climbing routes

The narrow road from Traversella towards Fondo leads through a rugged, wild landscape and offers a beautiful view of Monte Marzo. At Carëtte, at an altitude of 1326 m, a rocky crag offers a beautiful view of the Cantone di Cappia.

Above Traversella, the climbing area has more than 500 climbing routes in 21 sectors, including a sector for children.

Experience mining at the museum

The Museo Mineralogico e delle Attrezzature della Miniera di Traversella displays more than 300 mineral specimens, as well as work equipment found in the mine. For the 2026 season, the museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, from 1 May to 27 September.

The museum offers educational tours through the outdoor areas of the complex and the Mining Geopark, including a section of the tunnel, the hoisting shaft and the engine room. It is accessible to visitors with disabilities and has a tactile guidance path. An audio guide is available in Italian, English and Italian Sign Language (LIS).

Churches and mills as traces of local history

The parish church of Santa Croce in Traversella houses a wall organ built by F. Bossi in 1834. The church in the Cantone di Pianavilla was built between 1818 and 1825.

The Molino del Ponte was located near the Bersella stream in the Roncaglio area and consisted of two mill wheels in a single building. Traversella’s mills became more important in the 18th century because the difficult transport conditions made nearby milling facilities necessary.
