Candia Canavese combines the landscape of Lago di Candia with protected wetlands, walking trails and a remarkable wealth of artistic and historical traces. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Candia Canavese, you can tailor your stay entirely to your interests: from nature observation and short walks to cultural discoveries and regional flavours.

Lake, Wetlands and Special Nature Experiences

Parco Naturale Lago di Candia is home to numerous water birds and species-rich hygrophilous flora, including some species that have now become rare. Lago di Candia and the adjacent wetlands are areas of Community importance under the European Union Habitats Directive. This places a landscape at the centre whose appeal lies not only in the open expanse of water, but also in its wet habitats.

The “Variante del Parco Naturale del Lago di Candia” leads into the protected area and provides access to all the park trails within the wetland. SPB Route 01 begins on the western shore of Lago di Candia in the Lido area. The equipped municipal area there provides water and public toilets. For an easy-going stay by the lake, there is also the Area Attrezzata Lago di Candia: the green park on the lakeshore has picnic tables, children's play equipment and a large sunbathing lawn. Vivere i Parchi offers educational nature excursions on foot in the nature park. Vivere i Parchi's electric boat is accessible to wheelchair users via a certified ramp. The lake is also home to the Canottieri Candia rowing school.

Walks with Different Themes

Several short routes make it easy to shape the day according to your mood and fitness level. The Centro Storico - Santo Stefano route is a short walk from Via Castiglione to Chiesa di Santo Stefano del Monte. It reaches the Belvedere, a viewpoint from which Candia can be seen from above. The Lago - Centro route is a short walk from Lago di Candia to the centre of the Borgo and passes photographs from the “Fotografie Candia Ieri..” project.

The Percorso Poetico di Candia also has its own distinctive character. It includes a terracotta totem and eight terracotta tiles engraved with verses by local poets. The area of the Percorso Poetico di Candia is accessible to people with disabilities.

History, Art and Visible Traces

The Castello is a 19th-century reconstruction of the old castle that dominated the Borgo of Candia. Medieval wall remnants of the Castello can still be seen in the houses on Via Cesare Battisti. The private Castello is not accessible without the owners' permission, but it can be seen in its entirety while climbing to Chiesa Romanica di Santo Stefano al Monte. The private Vigna Colombaio can also be seen in its entirety during this ascent.

The crypt of Chiesa Romanica di Santo Stefano al Monte incorporates reused stone columns and capitals from the Lombard period. Piazza d’Arti Depaoli contains a small private square decorated with photographs and sculptures by the artist Gianni Depaoli, who was born in Candia. Palazzo Comunale contains a mural depicting the Nativity, probably dating from the first decades of the 16th century.

Next to Palazzo Comunale is an ancient ice house. It is a round well several metres deep that fishermen filled with ice in winter to preserve fish caught in the lake during the warmer season. Tench and pike from Lago di Candia had been valued in the markets of nearby towns since the 18th century.

Erbaluce and Choosing Your Holiday Apartment

At Vigna Colombaio, the Erbaluce grape variety is grown using the traditional “pergola canavesana” training system. When choosing your holiday apartment in Candia Canavese, you can therefore first consider which experiences should shape your stay: trails through the protected area, time by the lake, short walks with views or discoveries in the Borgo. Candia Canavese railway station is on the Turin–Chivasso–Aosta railway line and is therefore also a practical reference point for planning your trip.
