Hiking and cycling in the Roero

The Sentiero dell’Incanto is a 5 km panoramic circular trail around the historic village of Guarene. The easy route through the Roero hills is also suitable for families and opens up views of the Tanaro and the Langhe.

The Sentiero dell’Acino begins on Via Alessandro Roero, at the start of the road leading to the castle. In its most panoramic section, the view first opens onto the hills of the Astigiano, with Magliano Alfieri and Govone in the background, and beyond them to the Langhe. This makes it possible to take different viewpoints into account when planning.

The Sentiero dei Mulini runs through the Guarene area along the road beside the mill canal. For longer stretches, it is known as Strada Valmorterra, Strada Comunale del Lavandaro and Via Sotteri. Cyclists also have a specific point of reference: variant 6A of the Roero Bike Tour connects the settlements located along the ridges of Castagnito and Guarene and offers views of the Roero and the Langhe opposite.

The cultural history of the area includes several clearly distinct sites. The Church of San Michele is Guarene’s oldest religious building and has been documented since 1379. Construction work on the present-day Castello di Guarene began in 1726. The Church of SS. Annunziata was declared an important monument of art and history in 1909 and is an influential example of Piedmontese Baroque, particularly in the use of perspective in quadratura painting.

SS. Annunziata can host concerts, exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events thanks to an agreement between the municipality and the diocesan curia. At the Pinacoteca del Roero, the collection consists almost entirely of paintings by important representatives of contemporary Piedmontese art. The Collina di San Licerio is also home to an open-air museum created by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, featuring the permanent installation Flat Earth Visa 2019 by Canadian artist Paul Kneale.

Tradition, views and getting there

A local custom highlights another side of the town: Cantè j’euv is a tradition of collecting eggs on the Saturday before Palm Sunday. Groups of young people walk between the farmsteads, singing and inviting the residents to come out and donate a few eggs. From the Il Paramuro viewpoint, Barbaresco with its medieval tower and the city of Alba can be seen in the surrounding Langhe landscape.
