Montafia: A Townscape Shaped by Architecture and Geological History

Within its municipal boundaries, Montafia combines architectural heritage, church art and geological traces. In the center, the Palazzo Liberty shapes the townscape; the building is an example of Art Nouveau architecture. The Pliocene outcrops extend from the town center to the hamlets of Vignole and Bagnasco. The contrast between the central architecture and the geological layers of the hamlets gives the town different historical points of reference.

The sediments of Montafia contain the remains of two baleen whales, brought to light by the hills’ yellow layers of sand. Around one hundred lime trees line Viale della Rimembranza. They were planted in memory of those who fell in the First World War. Alongside the sediments and layers of sand, a memorial avenue is therefore also one of Montafia’s distinctive landscape features. The yellow layers of sand give the paleontological theme a tangible color in the landscape.

Bagnasco: Castle Remains and Visible Façade Details

The ruins of a medieval castle are visible in the Bagnasco district. A Gothic entrance arch remains as evidence of Bagnasco’s oldest history. The medieval part of Bagnasco is also home to the birthplace of the painter Francesco Bulgarelli. Its façade decorations, featuring sgraffiti and paintings from the first half of the 20th century, are still visible. In Bagnasco, the medieval castle remains with their Gothic entrance arch and the façade decorations with sgraffiti and paintings from the first half of the 20th century stand side by side as two distinct historical layers.

Churches from Several Periods and Architectural Styles

San Dionigi is a three-nave Neoclassical church. It has a noteworthy 18th-century portal. San Rocco was completely rebuilt in the 1930s in its present Neo-Gothic form. The Church of the Holy Martyrs Biagio and Giorgio in the Bagnasco district dates from the late 16th century.

In the Bagnasco district, the Church of San Giorgio stands in the district’s cemetery. It has three naves and three apses. The old Church of San Giorgio contains valuable frescoes. Inside the Church of San Martino are rustic depictions of Saint Martin on horseback. The surviving church motifs thus range from floor plans and architectural styles to frescoes and figurative representations. Vignole and Truffle Initiatives

In front of the Cappella della Madonna di Vignole, there is an equipped picnic area with tables and benches.
