Castle History and Churches

The former fortress of Moasca was destroyed by the Guelfs of Solaro in July 1308 after a siege lasting 22 days. In 1999, the municipality launched a programme to restore and enhance the surviving castle complex, including the restoration of its large underground cellar. The restored castle now houses the Museum of the Collections of Davide Lajolo. Its cellar is also home to the Bottega del Vino di Moasca “Nerodistelle” and the Restaurant & Café, Garden Winery “Tra la Terra ed il Cielo”.

The religious architecture includes the parish church of San Pietro and the church of San Rocco. San Pietro dates from the late 17th century, while San Rocco is from the same period. Its terracotta construction, bell tower and portico give San Rocco a distinctive appearance.

Wetland and Birdlife

The Rivi wetland lies in a hilly valley floor in the Torrente Nizza valley and close to the Torrente Nizza. It is a wetland protected by LIPU and is home to a rich variety of birdlife, including corn buntings that overwinter there. The Paludo e Rivi di Moasca nature reserve covers 7.09 hectares within Moasca.
