Rocca Grimalda combines a medieval townscape with a landscape that opens out far beyond its own rocky promontory. The settlement lies at the top of a rocky promontory and overlooks the left bank of the Orba. From this elevation, the view extends from the final foothills of the Apennines to the hills of Monferrato.
Vacation rental in Rocca Grimalda: discover the landscape and local history
The Museo della Maschera di Rocca Grimalda is Italy’s only museum explicitly dedicated to masks used at traditional calendar festivals in Italy and Europe. On Sundays, it is open from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until the second Sunday in October. On other days, visits for schools or groups are possible by prior arrangement.
The Lachera of Rocca Grimalda is a traditional combination of dance, ritual and theatrical performance that can be traced back to ancient springtime fertility and supplication customs. The Church of San Giacomo in the hamlet of the same name is associated with the cult of the Apostle James, which developed from the 9th century onward in connection with the medieval pilgrimage tradition to Compostela. It stands along an ancient road used by pilgrims that connected the Roman roads from Libarna and Gavi via San Cristoforo, Capriata and San Giacomo to Acqui.
Peirbuieira and Dolcetto di Rocca
Peirbuieira is a local dish with a deliberately secret recipe and a very old folk tradition. The dish can be tasted at the Festa della Peirbuieira festival. Traditionally, the festival takes place on the last Sunday in August and the three preceding days.
Viticulture shapes the landscape around Rocca Grimalda with its orderly rows of vines and vivid colors. The area has a centuries-old tradition of wine production, including Dolcetto di Rocca.
