Discover Grognardo: Castle, Forest and History
From the village up to the castle
The ruins of Grognardo Castle date back to the 13th century and tower above the village of the same name. The castle therefore shapes not only Grognardo’s history but also the way the place is perceived spatially: the village and the elevated ruins form one of the destination’s particularly striking motifs.
On the marked trail from the village up to Grognardo Castle, exposures of three different types of rock can be observed one after another. Along this route, you can combine an interest in a historic building with a direct observation of nature. Those who enjoy looking more closely will find an additional reason to experience the trail not merely as a route to the castle, but also as a landscape experience in its own right.
Palazzo, Pieve and Piedmontese culture
Palazzo Beccaria Incisa is a 16th-century aristocratic palace. The palazzo houses a painting from the Piedmontese school dating from the 17th century, depicting a mounted man leading armed troops. Architecture and painting thus place different emphases: the building represents the courtly past, while the painting focuses on a specific historical scene.
The Chiesa di S. Felice also bears several historical layers. It was formerly owned by the monks of S. Pietro di Acqui Terme, later by the noble Beccaria family and subsequently by the Beccaro family. The Chiesa di S. Felice is considered a Pieve dating back thousands of years. For travelers interested in culture, this creates a townscape in which sacred history, changing ownership and aristocratic heritage stand side by side.
After 8 September 1943 and the German occupation during the Second World War, the Jewish Genoese couple from the Urman family found refuge in Grognardo. On 16 January 1979, Francesco and Elsa Garofalo received the “Righteous Among the Nations” award from Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for their assistance to the Urman family. These two specific dates give the local history a personal dimension that extends beyond buildings and years.
Historical traces and local feast day
For the 16th century, a settlement around the fortified castle of Grognardo is documented, characterized by houses built closely together and three gates. In times of danger, these gates made it easier to defend the village and its inhabitants. Grognardo’s patronal feast is dedicated to Saint Andrew and takes place on 30 November. Thus, alongside the medieval fortifications, religious tradition and the fixed date of the local feast represent different aspects of the village.
Forests and trails in Grognardo
The forests of Grognardo offer opportunities for hiking and horseback riding. This broadens the possibilities for a stay beyond the area’s historic attractions and appeals to both walkers and those looking for activities on horseback.
