Castelbottaccio: Trails, Panorama and Culture

Castelbottaccio combines a varied hilly landscape with historic trails, impressive viewpoints and a dense succession of religious and architectural landmarks.

From Ancient Transhumance Routes to Panoramic Views

The Castelbottaccio area is crossed by the Tratturo Celano-Foggia. The historic transhumance route is approximately 208 kilometres long and connected the summer pastures in Abruzzo with the winter pastures in Apulia. Around the town, oak woods alternate with areas planted with forage crops, gentle hills, green meadows, badlands, small gorges and ancient paths. This creates a landscape in which open sections alternate with more deeply structured terrain forms.

The highest point in the area is the 717-metre-high Colle Iannone. From there, the view extends across the Matese area and the Biferno Valley to the Adriatic Sea and, on clear days, as far as the Tremiti Islands. Santa Giusta also combines a natural experience with a sense of spaciousness: the hill lies about two kilometres from the town at an altitude of around 650 metres, covers approximately three hectares and offers a broad, impressive panorama. Santa Giusta is also regarded as a place of great tranquillity and spirituality. The Chiesa di Santa Giusta is surrounded by greenery; a picnic area is located nearby.

According to the municipality, Castelbottaccio is suitable for excursions of all levels of difficulty, from easy walks to longer trekking tours. The recommended tour through the historic centre leads to the five construction phases, the towers, the walls and the small gorges. The complete tour on foot is estimated to take two days.

Another recommended route follows the old road towards Santa Giusta. It passes through the rural landscape and to rural religious sites; the tour to Santa Giusta and back takes four hours. The recommended route along the old road to the Biferno River explores the river landscape. One day is planned for the return journey, and the route is intended for trained hikers in good physical condition.

Churches and Works of Art in the Townscape

The Cappella di Sant'Oto is a single-nave church made of white stone, with a simple façade and a small bell gable. It was opened for worship in April 1899 and rebuilt in 1989. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is Baroque, has three naves and an irregular floor plan. The stone building preserves three important wooden statues: Santa Lucia by Crescenzo Ranallo from Oratino, dating from 1841; the Madonna delle Grazie by Giacomo Colombo, dating from 1694; and San Giuseppe by Silverio Giovannitti from Oratino, dating from 1780.

The history of the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie goes back even further. It was originally a Norman oratory and was consecrated for worship in May 1178. After restoration work, the church was reopened in 1999. Together with the Chiesa di Santa Giusta, surrounded by greenery, and the Sant'Oto chapel, it forms a succession of religious sites with different characteristics that can be connected by trails through Castelbottaccio.

Historical Traces in Santa Giusta and Castelbottaccio

The Santa Giusta site has a layered history. In Samnite times, it probably housed a cult site dedicated to Hercules. In Roman times, a villa was built there, followed by a cell of Basilian monks and later by hermits. Another remarkable monument is the Croce Stazionaria, a stone cross of historical and artistic interest. Over time, it was moved several times within the town and appears to have been reassembled from elements belonging to different contexts. Its original form is therefore difficult to determine.

The Morgia Corvara (Morgia Curvata) is also one of Castelbottaccio's prominent stone landmarks. The large limestone outcrop consists of whitish calcarenite and served as a resource for craftsmen and stonemasons. From 1900 onwards, new stone portals were created in the town, including on Corso Umberto I°, Via Vittorio Emanuele III, Via XXIV Maggio and Piazza della Vittoria. Around the Palazzo Baronale dei Cardone there was a walled garden, a water-filled moat and a drawbridge.

The Agriturismo Le Morge is located about one kilometre from the town centre on the road to Lupara and offers bed-and-breakfast accommodation overlooking the Biferno Valley.
