Fenile lies at an altitude of approximately 1,263 m on the road to Pescegallo and is one of the higher rural hamlets of Gerola Alta. The rural settlements there offer visitors insights into alpine architecture, and the houses of Fenile are considered to have been built from wood and stone. Fenile is also home to a 19th-century stable, which is among the rural cultural buildings of Gerola Alta. For those interested in culture, this stable is a specific architectural detail within Fenile. The wood-and-stone houses and the 19th-century stable provide two specific architectural points of reference in the village.

Walking trail between Fenile and Pescegallo

Between Fenile and Pescegallo, the walking trail of the “Percorso Vita” runs through a fir forest. The circular route is rated difficulty level T, takes 1 hour and has an elevation difference of 240 m. For daily planning, the circular route can be scheduled as a separate section between Fenile and Pescegallo. Its one-hour duration provides a fixed time frame; difficulty level T and the 240 m elevation difference are part of the trail’s physical classification. The path to Fenile is marked with wooden posts bearing the words “ANTICHE MULATTIERE”. A mule track connected Gerola Alta, Fenile and Pescegallo for centuries. The inscription along the path and the historical connection between the three places add a historical reference to the circular route through the fir forest.

Valley and mountain landscape around Fenile

Fenile gives its name to the valley “val de fenìl”. The Pizzo Mellasc peak is located in the immediate vicinity of Fenile. The Pizzo Varrone peak is also nearby. The Pizzo dei Tre Signori mountain is located there as well. In addition, the Monte Rotondo peak is located in the area around Fenile. The valley’s name remains directly connected with Fenile, while the four mountain names add further landscape references to the surroundings of the village.

Rural architecture and culture

The Palazzo Malacrida palace is located in the area around Fenile. The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale museum is also located nearby. The ruins of the Abbazia di San Pietro in Vallate and the Abbazia di San Pietro in Vallate monastery are located there as well. The 19th-century stable, by contrast, is located in Fenile itself. When planning cultural visits in the area, the stable in Fenile can be considered separately from the destinations in the surrounding area. In this way, rural construction and a historic stable take centre stage in the village itself, while the palace, museum, ruins and monastery are presented as different cultural destinations in the surrounding area.
