Ottobiano: Motorsport, Church Art and Archaeology

Ottobiano combines an international motorsport circuit with a remarkable concentration of historical sites. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ottobiano, active racing themes, sacred art and traces spanning the Celtic-Roman period to modern times come together here. This makes the town interesting for different kinds of holiday days: sometimes the circuit is the focus, while at other times it is the church of San Michele Arcangelo or the history of the landscape.

Holiday apartment in Ottobiano between motorsport and history

South Milano Karting in Ottobiano is an international circuit for motocross, motard and karting. The facility was founded in 1999 with a single asphalt track. Its sporting significance is also reflected in the fact that the Motocross World Championship was held there in 2017. For your travel planning, this creates a clear focus if you are interested in motorsport and would like to shape your stay around motocross, motard or karting.

San Michele Arcangelo and sacred art

The parish of San Michele Arcangelo is located at Via San Michele 1, 27030 Ottobiano (PV). The church of the same name was completely rebuilt from 1747 onwards and completed in 1772. At the same time, it consists of two structural sections, one from the 15th century and one from the 18th century. This means that a single sacred building brings together different historical construction phases.

Inside there are five altars: the high altar and the altars of the Suffragio, Carmine, Saint Joseph and the Cross. A painting also depicts Saint Michael and Saint Roch alongside the Virgin Mary. The bell tower is 55 metres high and is considered one of the tallest in the Lomellina. The Vitale cemetery chapel is part of the town's more recent history: its renovation in 1928–1929 was the work of Piero Bottoni 16.

Archaeological traces around Ottobiano

Ottobiano's most important Celtic-Roman settlement was located on what is now Dosso delle scuole. This hill was originally larger and higher and was protected from flooding by the nearby Torrente Erbognone. The della Rotorta necropolis comprises around 40 burials and dates from 50 BC to approximately AD 100. The Valpersa coin hoard consisted of around 450 coins and dates from the 3rd century AD.

The medieval past is also tangible: Ottobiano Castle has been documented since a feudal sale deed from 1481. For the first half of the 16th century, it is recorded under the name “castrum Vitabiani” as a well-preserved complex with a drawbridge, moat and adjoining buildings. Near Ottobiano, the Via delle Gallie runs south of the Volpina and Bonaparte farmsteads. Along this road, when water levels are low near the locks of the Torrente Erbognone in the Travacchino Busca locality, the remains of the pillars of an earlier bridge emerge.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans?

When looking for a holiday apartment in Ottobiano, you can first decide which of these themes should shape your stay. Motorsport creates a different travel focus from a culturally and historically oriented stay centred around San Michele Arcangelo, the history of the castle and the archaeological evidence. Those travelling with different interests can vary their days accordingly: sporting themes, sacred art and traces of the historic landscape offer several distinct reasons to get to know Ottobiano more closely.
