Usmate Velate: Nature, Culture and Local Traditions
Usmate Velate combines nature-based discoveries, historic buildings and vibrant local traditions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Usmate Velate, you can plan your trip around your family’s interests: walks through woods and fields, culture in villas and churches, or a visit to recurring events.
Nature and Small Discoveries in the Bosco della Cassinetta
The Bosco della Cassinetta connects the inhabited areas of Usmate and Velate. The area covers more than 17 hectares of hollows, woodland and cultivated fields. At the same time, the Bosco is part of Retenatura, a network of protected areas managed by Legambiente. Within the Parco dei Colli Briantei, it lies between the Valfredda and Boschina hollows.
A guided tour of the Bosco della Cassinetta includes 18 stations with QR codes leading to descriptions of the respective areas and lasts approximately 30–40 minutes. For children, the Orto dei bambini offers hands-on activities: there, they can learn about sowing, plant care and harvesting, as well as observe small animals. This makes it possible to combine peaceful experiences in nature with engaging discoveries.
Events with Activity and a Local Atmosphere
The Camminata nel Parco dei Colli Briantei is a recurring, open-to-all, non-competitive running and walking event through woods, countryside and farmsteads. The 7, 14 and 21 km routes have refreshment points; refreshments are also available at the finish at Villa Scaccabarozzi. In 2026, the Camminata starts and finishes in the park of Villa Scaccabarozzi in Velate. The different route lengths help you assess the character of your outing from the planning stage.
Another aspect of the local year is represented by the Falò di Sant'Antonio. This recurring tradition involves lighting a fire at the Oratorio di Velate. Originally, the custom was intended to clear the ground of remnants from the previous harvest and bring good luck for the new year. The Falò also features food stalls serving sweet and savoury dishes.
Villas, Churches and Art in Usmate Velate
Villa Scaccabarozzi was built towards the end of the 18th century by Count Rinaldo di Barbiano, Prince of Belgioioso d’Este. Its park combines an English landscape garden with woodland, lawns, a greenhouse and an artificial grotto. The reopening of the park was ordered on 22 September 2025; a technical inspection on 19 September 2025 confirmed that the site could be used.
The sacred buildings include the Cappella San Felice, built by Giacomo Moraglia in neoclassical forms. Its sculptures are by Giuseppe Croff, Benedetto Cacciatori and Vincenzo Vela. The present-day church of the Parrocchia Santa Margherita was built in 1930–1933 in the Lombard Romanesque style; the frescoes on the vaults of the apse and transept are by Giovanni Briani.
The Chiesetta del Dosso was probably built in the first quarter of the 19th century with a circular floor plan and is dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta stands on the edge of a plateau overlooking the surrounding plain. Its first construction phase probably dates back to the 12th century; in 1884 it was enlarged and rebuilt in the Lombard Romanesque style and consecrated in 1889. The Chiesetta di S. Lucia in Cascina Corrada was built in 1958–1960 on land donated to the parish by Lucia Vertua.
