Holiday apartment in Varedo: villas, churches and historical traces

Varedo showcases architectural history at Villa Bagatti Valsecchi and two churches. The park features a historic avenue, a fountain and an icehouse; Villa Agnesi and the viscose factory add to the town’s history. Villa Bagatti Valsecchi: architectural history and park

Villa Bagatti Valsecchi in Varedo was built in 1878 on the foundations of an existing 18th-century farmhouse. Its portico is supported by 24 white granite columns.

The historic avenue at the villa is considered the most important area of historical and artistic value in GruBrìa Park. The perspective avenue of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi is 1,347.70 metres long and 35 metres wide in total. It dates back to 1881 and was designed by the engineer Domenico Laveni. For a walk or a planned walking route, its length of more than one kilometre is a distinct time and distance consideration.

The villa is about a five-minute walk from Varedo railway station; when planning your journey, this walk can be treated as a short separate section. The park also contains an icehouse, considered the only surviving one of the five facilities recorded in Varedo. A fountain aligned with the villa and the avenue has a concave-elliptical basin covering 121.38 square metres and a central water jet. The park covers approximately 64,500 square metres.

Churches in Varedo: façade and interior

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is a Lombard Gothic Revival building designed by the architect Giuseppe Bagatti Valsecchi. Its façade features a large rose window with a profiled terracotta surround. The altar contains four silver busts of saints as well as white marble statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The Bagatti Valsecchi family name appears in Varedo both in connection with the villa and with the design of this church.

Another historic church stands in Varedo’s Valera district on Provincial Road 132 towards Desio. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunciata dates from the 17th century. Its interior includes a rectangular liturgical hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling section.

Notable people and industrial heritage

Villa Agnesi is closely associated with the memory of the scientist, humanist and philanthropist Maria Gaetana Agnesi.

Varedo’s industrial heritage includes the viscose factory. It operated from 1924 under the name “S.A. Seta Artificiale Varedo” and was given the name SNIA in 1927.

Wildlife passage between Varedo, Desio and Nova Milanese

In the agricultural area between Varedo, Desio and Nova Milanese, there is a wildlife passage for small animals beneath Viale Brianza.
