Sermide for Days of Culture and Nature
When choosing a holiday apartment in Sermide, you can shape your trip around different interests: architecture and history, active days along the embankments, or peaceful experiences in wetlands. The sights do not belong to a single theme, giving your itinerary various possible directions.
Gonzaga Tower and Remarkable Churches
La Torre, the Gonzaga Tower, is the only surviving tower of the citadel that the municipality of Mantua built around the year 1000 and that Ludovico Gonzaga fortified after 1370. The tower bears an elegant, recently restored terracotta coat of arms of the Gonzaga family. Access to La Torre is available by prior reservation, making this historic building a deliberately planned stop on your itinerary.
The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul likewise makes a striking architectural statement. The Neo-Gothic building was constructed from 1865 to 1871, has three naves, and is 65 metres long, 27 metres wide and 21 metres high. The Capuchin church offers a different historical focus: it is the surviving part of a monastery founded in 1650 on the right bank of the Po, east of Sermide, and contains a Rococo-period tabernacle.
Po Landscapes and Nature Oases
The Parco Golenale del Gruccione is a “Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale”, was recognised in 2005, and is located in Lombardy in the municipality of Sermide. The natural setting also includes the 17-hectare Digagnola Nature Oasis. It lies in a strip of land between the Argine Maestro and the Argine Golenale, which extends towards the municipality of Felonica. Vegetation and fauna typical of wetlands are concentrated there, creating a distinct focus for anyone who wants to experience the landscape rather than simply pass through it.
Walks and Cycling Routes along the Po
People go walking on the Po embankments in Parco Golenale del Gruccione during the summer season. Sermide also has appealing walking and cycling routes along the Po embankments. The Digagnola Nature Oasis can be reached by bicycle via the “Digagnola bike” route, which begins at Via Argine Po. This allows you to plan different daily rhythms: extended exercise on the embankments, a focused bike ride to the nature oasis, or a leisurely walk during the summer season.
Industrial History at the Teleferica
The Teleferica is a rare example of industrial archaeology on the Po. Originally, it formed part of a facility supplied across the river for transporting coal and other materials to the now-disused sugar refinery. Cultural gatherings are held in the Teleferica hall beside the Po. Use of the Teleferica is available by prior reservation.
When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore take your preferred travel focus into account: historic buildings and cultural gatherings, bike rides and walks, or the wetland landscape of Digagnola. A holiday apartment in Sermide provides the right thematic setting for a trip whose days you want to vary between culture, Po embankments and experiences in nature.
