History, churches and sacred art

Lodi was refounded in 1158 after the Milanese had razed the city to the ground. Construction of Lodi Cathedral Basilica began in autumn 1158 or spring 1159; its crypt contains the relics of the patron saint San Bassiano. The Chiesa di San Cristoforo was built around 1300 to fulfil a vow made by the inhabitants of Lodi, who, according to legend, had been freed from the dragon Tarantasio, which haunted the waters of Lago Gerundo.

Museums offering different ways to engage

The Tempio Civico dell'Incoronata houses 15th-century frescoes, including works by Ambrogio da Fossano (Bergognone). The underground rooms of the Tempio contain the Museo del Tesoro dell'Incoronata. Its holdings include sacred furnishings, two illuminated manuscripts, worked copper vessels, a precious Pace from the late 16th century and a 16th-century cross. At the Museo dello Strumento Musicale e della Musica di Lodi, you can try out some musical instruments yourself. Trying out individual instruments is also part of the museum visit there. The Museo Ettore Archinti organises exhibition projects presenting historical and emerging artists.

Printmaking and art in the urban space

The Museo della Stampa e della Stampa d'arte traces the history of printing from woodcuts through various printing techniques to the digital revolution. The museum is located in the former “Lodigraf” printing house in Lodi.
