Piantedo’s Landscape between Mountain and Countryside

Monte Legnone is located in the vicinity of Piantedo; Pizzo Alto, Pizzo Rotondo, and Monte Rotondo are also nearby. In Piantedo, Rifugio Scoggione is situated on the northern slope of Monte Legnone. From Alpe Rusico, it can be reached via a two-hour hike with an ascent of 850 metres. The ascent to Monte Legnone from Rifugio Scoggione takes three hours of hiking and involves 1,034 metres of elevation gain. Alpe Rusico and Rifugio Scoggione therefore mark two different starting points: the hike from Alpe Rusico leads to the mountain hut, while the onward ascent to Monte Legnone begins there. For a day in the mountains, the duration and elevation gain can therefore each be assigned to a separate section, without combining the figures into a single tour.

Hiking Trails with Different Stages

Another key attraction is the Sentiero del Viandante. The trail is 45 km long and can be completed in four stages, each lasting approximately four hours on average. The elevation difference ranges from 400 to 100 metres. The Sentiero del Viandante runs halfway up the slope through chestnut woods and olive groves, past dry-stone walls and abandoned villages, with expansive views of the lake. Piantedo is one of the local stops along the Sentiero Valtellina. On the Sentiero del Viandante, the four stages can be arranged for different hiking days according to their average duration and respective elevation difference.

Sacred and Historical Traces

When entering the Valtellina from Lake Como, you first come across the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie e del Suffragio, the first sacred building along this route. In the past, Piantedo was an obligatory transit point through the Pian di Spagna thanks to the Scalotta or Scalottola road. Piantedo’s historical transhumance established close connections with Valchiavenna, particularly with Valle Spluga and nearby Val Gerola. During the summer months, the farmers of Piantedo stayed there with their livestock. Scalotta or Scalottola and the transhumance thus connect specific areas: the passage through Pian di Spagna with the summer stays in Valchiavenna, Valle Spluga, and Val Gerola.

In the Verdione area, the ruins of an old fortification were discovered, possibly a castle or a fortified house. The ruins of the Abbazia di San Pietro in Vallate are located in the vicinity of Piantedo; the abbey is a church. The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale and Palazzo Malacrida are located in the area surrounding Piantedo and provide additional cultural points of interest for your stay.
