Art and history in Naggio

The origins of the Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate date back to the 15th century, as evidenced, among other things, by rediscovered frescoes. A Crucifixion scene was restored in 1988. In 1629, the church became a parish church and was consecrated in 1683.

The apse of this church contains a triptych from the late 16th century. It depicts scenes from the lives of Saint Anthony, Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch and was created by the painter Giovan Antonio de Rossi. The Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata also houses a remarkable collection of 17th-century paintings depicting Our Lady of Sorrows, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and the Virgin Mary.

Above the Naggio district, in the locality of “La Comuna”, stands the Cappella di San Rocco. It was built in the mid-19th century during the cholera epidemics that ravaged the Italian peninsula and Europe from 1830 onwards. The statue follows the traditional iconography of the saint who protects against the plague and depicts Saint Roch with a pilgrim’s staff, a gourd bottle and a bread bag; at his feet, a dog carries a piece of bread in its mouth.

Secular buildings preserve traces of a local artistic tradition in their ornate portals and in the frescoes on houses and in the lanes. In the central piazzetta stands a fountain with statues, considered a unique example in the Grandola area. The local cultural history also includes the Società Filarmonica di Naggio, a lively ensemble that provided music for the town’s feast days and remained active until the outbreak of the Second World War.

Trails between alpine pastures, lime kilns and fossils

The Percorso delle Calchere e degli Orridi runs from Naggio, Località S. Rocco, to Sass Corbèe. After about half an hour on foot, you reach the first Calchere, installations used for lime production. The Percorso dell'alpigiano (Alpeggi e Pascoli) also begins in Naggio and climbs uphill to pastures and alpine meadows. Well-marked, easy-to-walk trails connect the pastures and alpine meadows. For planning your day, the approximately half-hour section to the first Calchere provides a clear time frame for starting this trail.

The 26-kilometre circular route “Dal Lario al Ceresio” runs from Menaggio through Grandola ed Uniti, Codogna, Velzo, Naggio, Gottro, Carlazzo, Corrido and Porlezza, returning to Menaggio. The 26 kilometres comprise the entire loop, including the return to Menaggio. On this loop, Naggio lies between Velzo and Gottro.
