Livo combines a distinctive historic townscape with trails through chestnut forests, valleys and an impressive mountain landscape. When you choose a holiday apartment in Livo, you can therefore plan your vacation days according to different interests: between sacred art and rural architecture, between short discoveries in the village and longer routes towards Val Darengo or Val di Bares.
Churches, frescoes and a distinctive town center
In the town center of Livo stands the Chiesa di San Giacomo Nuova, built in the 17th century. An older testament is the Chiesa San Giacomo Vecchia, first documented in 1297. The vault of its pronaos contains frescoes with scenes from Genesis dating from the second half of the 16th century. The church also preserves numerous devotional frescoes from the first half of the 16th century on the side walls and pillars of the nave. They depict Mary, Christ, God the Father and saints from popular tradition.
The historic center itself is also worth exploring attentively. Its old settlement structure consists of parallel streets connected by right-angled lanes that follow the slope. Typical rural houses in Livo include stone buildings with wooden balconies and carved doors. Their façades are decorated with votive frescoes from the 16th century. A walk through the village thus becomes an encounter with architectural forms and pictorial motifs that are visible not only in individual sights, but in the townscape itself.
Holiday apartment in Livo between forests and mountain trails
Livo is surrounded by chestnut forests. Not far from the village, trails lead through the forests of Monte Sasso Pelo; from there, the Insubric Line can be seen.
The Via dei Monti Lariani, Sentiero 4, provides a useful orientation. It is marked with red-white-red signs: colored markings appear on stones, while aluminum markers are attached to tree trunks and walls. The markings bear the numbers 1 to 4. As a broader section, Stage 4 of the Via dei Monti Lariani leads from Garzeno to Peglio through the valleys of Valli di Liro, S. Jorio and Dosso, as well as through rural villages that have remained intact.
From Dangri into the valleys
From Livo, access is via the road to Crotto Dangri. A €1 toll applies; after a further 3 km, you can park your car in Dangri. From there, hiking trails lead towards Val Darengo, its alpine lake and the wild Val di Bares. The canyoning route in Val di Bares begins in Dangri near Livo and initially follows the path through Val di Bares to the entry point.
On the way to Capanna Como, after about 30 minutes on foot you reach the Madonna di Livo sanctuary at an altitude of 745 m. Capanna Como stands on a rocky promontory south of Lago Darengo. Online reservation and payment are required for this mountain hut. You will then receive an access code valid for the date specified in the booking.
Village life and days suited to your vacation
Traditional pastoral activities, which continue to play an important role today, are also part of Livo’s character. These include keeping sheep, goats and cattle. This complements the image of a place where historic churches, rural houses, forest landscapes and routes into the valleys can be meaningfully understood as different vacation themes. For families with different interests, it can be helpful to establish the desired daily rhythm before choosing a holiday apartment: a walk through the town center, a short route to the sanctuary or a more extensive excursion from Dangri each offers different impressions of Livo and its surroundings.
Other places for orientation: Menaggio, Maslianico, Lanzo D’intelvi, Magreglio, Corrido, Grandate, Erba, Sala Comacina.
