Several routes with distinctly different profiles are available to help you plan your hikes. The “Da Dasio al Rifugio San Lucio” route is 3 km long and involves an ascent of 460 m. It leads from Val Rezzo to Cavargna and is designated as a snowshoe route for autumn and winter. The “Cavargna - Garzirola - San Lucio” hiking trail begins beside the church in Cavargna, climbs steeply, partly along a paved path, towards Monte Garzirola and leads to the Monti Cavarlezza at 1,251 m.
A longer connection is the 45-km “Sentiero delle 4 Valli”: its second stage leads from Malè to Cavargna, and the third from Cavargna to Dasio. From Cavargna, experienced and well-trained hikers can also climb to the summit of Monte Garzirola; at the Rifugio there, a panorama of Lake Lugano opens up. The different route lengths and levels of difficulty help you adapt active days to your own plans.
Monte Garzirola, Val Cavargna and San Lucio
The Rifugio Garzirola is located at 1,975 m on the southern slopes of the Monte Garzirola of the same name. The Rifugio San Lucio lies in Val Cavargna at 1,554 m and is located at the Alpine pass of the same name in the heart of Val Cavargna. In 2000, it was converted from a former Guardia di Finanza barracks.
The San Lucio Oratory lies near the San Lucio Pass, which is situated at 1,542 m above sea level on the border with Switzerland; the oratory has been documented since the 13th century. From Cavargna, you can also hike through the Bosco Sacro, a beech forest that serves as an effective avalanche barrier.
Museo della Valle and the churches of Cavargna
The Museo della Valle is an ethnographic museum documenting local life in the mountain area and traditional activities such as farming, alpine livestock farming, forestry, woodworking, and the processing of iron and tin. It was founded in 1982 to preserve and pass on the traditions, customs and costumes of Val Cavargna, and is recognised as a museum collection because it meets the prescribed minimum requirements. The section on popular devotion includes furnishings, liturgical vestments and liturgical objects from the former parish church of San Lorenzo in Cavargna, the subsidiary church of Vegna and the mountain oratory of San Lucio.
The old church of San Lorenzo in Cavargna has been documented in the Pieve of Porlezza since the 13th century and was elevated to a parish church in 1575. The new church of San Lorenzo preserves a 16th-century altarpiece and a 15th-century statue of San Lucio. In Cavargna, you can therefore encounter different layers of time in sacred art and local history.
Lucio di Cavargna is regarded as a shepherd and cheesemaker, as well as the patron saint of alpine farmers and cheesemakers. During Cavargna’s patronal mass, the “Barba di S. Lorenzo” is traditionally burned: the container, filled with cotton wool and hanging from the ceiling, symbolises the martyrdom of the saint. The patronal feast in honour of San Lorenzo is held on 10 August. A regional speciality is Dirunsel, the DE.CO. dish of Cavargna made from maize polenta and served with buttermilk.
These specific focal points can provide useful guidance when choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home in Cavargna: short or longer hikes, mountain destinations with elevations, religious history, ethnographic topics or regional cuisine featuring Dirunsel. This allows you to plan your stay according to the desired balance of activity, discovery and time together, without a single type of excursion defining the destination.
