Cimbergo: Rock Art, Churches and Medieval Traces
Accommodation in Cimbergo
Cimbergo reveals itself through several layers of time: rock engravings take centre stage in Campanine, while churches and medieval traces offer further historical perspectives. The paths in the nature reserve explore archaeological, ethnographic and environmental themes. There are also striking details on churches and castle ruins, as well as a mountain biking itinerary to Cimbergo. This lets you plan your stay around a wide range of interests.

Rock Engravings and Paths in Campanine
Campanine di Cimbergo is one of the most important visitor areas of the Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo Rock Engravings Nature Reserve. The reserve covers more than 400 engraved rocks and extends over about 300 hectares across Nadro di Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo. The rocks lie in a natural mid-mountain landscape that preserves traces of human activity over time. Landscape and history belong together here, without reducing the area to a single theme.
More than 100 engraved rocks have been identified in Campanine; only about a dozen of them are included in the tourist trail. The number of known rocks and the scope of this trail are therefore two different measures. The nature reserve’s visitor paths can be explored in a few hours or over several days. This range helps you distinguish a shorter exploration from a multi-day stay. At the same time, the paths explore archaeological, ethnographic and environmental aspects: the focus is not only on rock art, but also on the human traces and landscape in which it has been preserved.
Church Art and Medieval Traces
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta was built around 1600 over an older chapel dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. Its interior is Baroque in style. The single-nave interior and four side altars made of inlaid marble define the space; the altars are decorated with stuccowork by Pellini S. The building’s form, materials and furnishings offer different points of reference if you are interested in the history of religious architecture.
The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista also offers specific dates and works of art as a way into local history. The Confraternita dei facchini di Venezia built the church in 1552 with the participation of the Bishop of Brescia, Paolo Zane. The bell tower had already been built in 1529 and features bifora windows and Ghibelline crenellations. The altarpiece, created in 1628 by Baldissera D. Anna, depicts the birth of John the Baptist. The tower, church building and altarpiece thus represent different construction and creation dates, which can be distinguished as you look around.
The Rocca di Cimbergo dates from the 12th or 13th century and stands above the path leading to Campanine. Today, only a few ruins remain of the medieval Castello di Cimbergo. It stands on a projecting spur of land above the Re stream. These details connect the historic architecture with two clearly described landscape features: the path to Campanine and the Re valley.
Mountain Scenery and Active Pursuits
Further afield in the region, Rifugio De Marie is located in the middle Valle Camonica, in Parco dell’Adamello. Built in the 1930s, it stands in the Volano basin, surrounded by the Tredenus group and, to the south, Pizzo Badile Camuno. Via Raetia also offers panoramic views of the valley and the massifs of Concarena and Pizzo Badile. This regional perspective complements the archaeological and church-history themes with a distinctly mountainous landscape.
Another activity is a mountain biking itinerary: it follows a yellow-and-red-marked MTB trail along a path to Cimbergo. This gives you a clear distinction when planning between visiting the rock engravings, exploring churches and historic buildings, and taking a bike ride on a route that leads to Cimbergo. You can use the perspective you would like to shape your stay as a starting point for planning the rest of your trip.
Find a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Trip
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Cimbergo, it helps to first decide how you want to spend your days. If you want to focus on the rock engravings and the themes of the nature reserve, Campanine offers a specific point of reference. Church art, architectural history and medieval traces offer different points of interest; the mountain biking itinerary adds a sporting option. When choosing your accommodation, the balance you want between history, archaeological exploration and activity can therefore serve as a helpful guide.
