Castel Mella was founded by the Lombards in the 6th century. A Lombard grave containing a burial item, a sword, was discovered there. A later historical landmark is the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei SS. Its apse contains an altarpiece by Paolo da Caylina the Younger; the three domes and walls are covered with a fresco cycle by Giovanni Antonio Cappello.

The Santuario della Madonnina del Boschetto in Onzato also brings together different periods. The site has been considered sacred from Celtic times, through the Roman period and into the Christian era. The present church was built between 1730 and 1737 in the Lombard Baroque style. Every year on September 8, the Festa della Madonna del Boschetto is celebrated there on the occasion of the Nativity of Mary. The celebrations include liturgical services, games and market stalls.

Museums, Manor Houses and Local History

The Museo del Falegname “Cav. Pietro Ferrari” contains more than 2,000 woodworking tools and machines and has no architectural barriers. Villa Fenaroli is a rural manor house built in the 17th century, with a portico and a walled brolo garden. Together with the agricultural outbuildings and the brolo garden, the villa is protected under Law 1089/1939. It is privately owned and not open to visitors – an important distinction between visible local history and destinations that can actually be visited.

Local tradition also includes La Macina, known in the local dialect as La Màsnä. The site was formerly the Molino di Onzato and comprised a two-wheeled mill and an oil mill. At the same time, La Macina, also called La Masna, is considered a historic osteria known for dishes from the farming tradition. At the annual Sagra del Loertis in Castel Mella, the wild hop known as Loertis takes centre stage; traditional dishes and local products are offered.

Fontanili Landscape and Routes for Active Days

Parco del Fontanone is a 5,940 m² recreational area on the banks of the Roggia Fontanone. Its water springs from numerous Fontanili springs. The park is part of the “Via dei Fontanili” cycle route network, combining nature observation with an active way to explore the area. Bosco Urbano dell’Oppolo covers 16,030 m² and consists of 300 native trees from local nurseries. It is also wheelchair accessible and has adjacent parking facilities.
