Palazzago: Hiking Trails, Churches and Local Cuisine

Palazzago combines signposted hiking trails, churches in several local districts and regional products.

Hiking between local districts and valleys

The Sentiero 861 connects Parco Oasi in Barzana with the summit of Monte Linzone, passing through several local districts of Palazzago. The trail is classified as difficulty level E for hiking trails. The Sentiero 861 and Palazzago's smaller hiking trails are signposted; the signs indicate route names, places and walking times. The Percorso dei Pradéi is a nearly 8 km circular trail with 370 metres of elevation gain through the Pradéi Valley and Valle Bruciata south of the town centre.

Navigation and landscape

The Sentiero 862 begins at the car park opposite Palazzago's festival grounds on Via Annunciata and leads down a staircase to the B.V. Maria delle Salette church in Beita. Beita municipal park has picnic facilities and toilets. The circular trail near Brocchione offers views of the local district on one side of the hill and the beginning of the Bergamo plain on the other. The SS 342 is also known as “Briantea”; it crosses the southern part of Palazzago and connects Bergamo with Lecco.

Churches and historical details

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Palazzago preserves the altarpiece of the Assumption by Giovan Battista Moroni. Its bell tower dates from the 14th century and was converted from a defensive tower. The parish church of Gromlongo, a local district of Palazzago, dates from the 17th century and has a richly carved sandstone façade. The parish church of San Carlo Borromeo in Burligo preserves works by Gian Paolo Cavagna as well as a Bossi organ from 1797.

The Church of Santa Margherita also has a layered construction history: it was founded in 1489, demolished and rebuilt in 1730. Its octagonal floor plan and the vault decorated with trompe-l'œil paintings define its design. On 3 August 1728, the foundation stone was laid in Palazzago for a new church dedicated to the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist; it was blessed and opened for worship in 1755.

Local cuisine and products

Agricultural products in Palazzago include grapes, wine, honey and chestnuts. La Nostra Cucina serves handmade Scarpinocc with melted butter and sage, as well as natural wines produced in-house by the farm. The restaurant is open at weekends; it accepts reservations for private events, ceremonies and small groups.

The monumental tree is over 20 metres tall, has a circumference of 340 cm and an estimated age of 150 years.
