Mapello combines natural landscapes, trails and architectural history. Parts of the municipality of Mapello lie within the local P.L.I.S. del Monte Canto e del Bedesco park. The natural setting extends from the local park to the broad plain at Monte Canto. Sentiero 891 offers a hike divided into stages; churches, the Santuario della Madonna di Prada and Villa Gromo di Mapello bring together sacred architectural history and historic architecture, each with its own focus.

Sentiero 891: length and stages

Sentiero 891 is a 14-kilometre trail, which is recommended to be completed in two freely selectable stages. Its starting point is at the Santuario della Madonna di Prada in the municipality of Mapello, at an altitude of 250 metres; there is a car park there. The specification of 14 kilometres and the recommendation of two stages therefore provide the key parameters for planning the day.

San Girolamo and the avenue to Madonna di Prada

The church of San Girolamo has a flat wooden ceiling with densely decorated and gilded coffered sections. It stands at the beginning of the lime-tree-lined avenue leading to the Santuario della Madonna di Prada. A 500-metre-long, tree-lined avenue leads to the Santuario della Madonna di Prada. The 500 metres give the route from the church site to the sanctuary a clearly defined length.

The Oratory of Madonna di Prada: early architectural history

An initial oratory of the Santuario della Madonna di Prada was probably built as early as the 14th century and rebuilt at the end of the 15th century.

Monte Canto and Villa Gromo di Mapello

The Santuario della Madonna di Prada lies on the broad plain at the eastern foot of Monte Canto and is surrounded by a landscape of particular natural value. Villa Gromo di Mapello is located in an amphitheatre formed by centuries-old trees. It was built in the first half of the 18th century on behalf of the Zanchi counts. For those interested in culture, the broad plain at Monte Canto and the amphitheatre formed by centuries-old trees stand side by side as distinct landscapes.

The Baroque parish church of San Michele Arcangelo

The Baroque parish church of San Michele Arcangelo was built in isolation on a hill and dominates Mapello. Its position on the hill shapes its place within the townscape of Mapello.

Regional delights at “Lungo il Viale”
