Calusco D'adda: Historic Sites and Adda Experiences
Calusco D'adda combines historical landmarks with the landscape along the Adda. Churches, monastic complexes, a former castle, paths through the woods and sporting activities reveal different sides of the town. Families can alternate cultural discoveries, exercise and relaxing breaks in their daily itinerary.
Historic Sites Around Calusco D'adda
Calusco Castle can be traced back to 1127. A tower from the former castle has been preserved near the public gardens. The Baccanello monastery also contains medieval traces. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Baccanello has been documented since the 16th century; construction of the Franciscan monastery of Baccanello began in 1605 and was completed in 1609. Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who later became Pope John XXIII, was associated with this monastery.
San Fedele offers two clearly distinct historical connections: the former church has been documented since 1125 and preserves the base of its medieval bell tower, while the new Church of San Fedele was consecrated on 7 December 1886. The Church of San Michele di Verghi was founded more than a thousand years ago near the Adda River. At the Verghi site, the foundations of a small apse church measuring approximately 12.5 × 8 metres, as well as traces of monastery walls, have been preserved. The Chapel of the Plague Victims of Verghi was built in 1836. In Vanzone, the Church of Santa Maria Bambina has been documented since around 1260. A tower structure incorporated into today's Villa Colleoni in the Torre district is recorded as a designation of the place for 1161 and 1255.
Verghi, the Adda Landscape and Active Days
Verghi lies on a natural balcony overlooking the Adda River and in the direction of the Poiret weir. A path leads through the woods to an extensive green area equipped for rest below the Ponte San Michele. The Sentiero Segré leads from Calusco towards Villa d’Adda. On the steep path to Verghi, a side trail branches off towards the valley’s rock faces equipped for sport climbing.
On the left bank of the Adda River, the Semenza hydroelectric power station is located in Calusco d’Adda near the Robbiate weir. Its building is clad in Ceppo dell’Adda stone and was inaugurated in 1920. For a digital approach, Edison offers a virtual visit with Google Street View in a 360-degree view. The tourist and sporting activities of the Canoa Kayak Club Calusco d'Adda include trekking and cycling excursions, as well as trips on the Adda River by boat, canoe and kayak.
