The “Del Carretto” castle and Bardineto’s first fortified village were built around the 13th century by the Del Carretto marquises. The castle can be reached via Via Romana. The Museo antropologico permanente offers another way to explore the history of the town. It displays a collection of practical technology and rural crafts with thousands of rustic tools, mostly from Val Bormida. The objects are arranged in more than 400 original displays and illustrate aspects of everyday life and predominantly agricultural work before industrialisation.

A particular focus is the Buranco di Bardineto. It is considered the largest cave in Val Bormida and one of Liguria’s most interesting karst complexes, and contains significant prehistoric evidence. Overall, the Buranco comprises around 2 kilometres of passages and galleries arranged on several levels above an underground stream. The second karst trail for discovering the karst features and caves of Bardineto is around 2.5 kilometres long, can be completed entirely on foot, has an elevation gain of 65 metres and is explained by nine information panels. It reaches the upper entrance of the Buranco di Bardineto.

Hiking and mountain-biking routes

For a longer tour, Sentiero no. 1 is available. It is 22 kilometres long, takes 8 hours and 30 minutes, has difficulty level I and is suitable for mountain bikes. The route runs along the south-eastern edge of the municipality of Bardineto, follows the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri and partly passes through the municipalities of Erli and Castelvecchio. In the direction of Monte Carmo, it offers extensive views over the Ligurian Riviera.

Sentiero no. 2 leads from Bardineto via Ca' Du Piccu, Cormore, Piaggia Scura and Prato Cuneo to Monte Agnellino. The 9-kilometre route takes 3 hours and 30 minutes, has difficulty level MD and is suitable for mountain bikes. In connection with this trail, a path leads into the Acquetta forests and follows the course of the Rio Secco from above. A short ascent on a forest track branches off to Lago Rotondo, a karst sinkhole containing water. Route 4 leads via Località Crosa, Pianfieno and Catalano, is 6 kilometres long, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, has difficulty level M and is also suitable for mountain bikes. The different lengths and difficulty levels help you adapt your daily plans to your preferred tour.

Pass, panorama and self-guided visit

Colle Scravaion is an 814-metre-high pass in the Ligurian Alps in the Province of Savona and connects Bardineto with Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena. It can be reached via the main road within the municipality of Bardineto. The area is popular with hikers and cyclists because of its beautiful views and extensive panoramas.
