San Polo is a distinctive old village of medieval origins; its beginnings probably date back to the first half of the 10th century. Its churches and the small Madonna della Noce sanctuary provide the village with several cultural points of interest. Getting there also shapes your plans: the historic centre is pedestrianised, while Piazza Piacentini can be reached by car. You can therefore consider which aspects you want to shape your stay—village history, religious buildings or a well-planned journey.

Churches with different historical connections

The main church, SS. Pietro e Paolo, is the palace church of Santo Polo Castle. Its connection to the castle offers a different way into the village’s history than the church of San Barnaba. The latter is of ancient origin, was remodelled later, and preserves paintings from the 16th century. The two churches thus bring together different historical layers: the connection between church and castle, and an older church building with surviving paintings from a later period.

When planning your trip, San Polo cannot therefore be reduced to a single date or one historical focus. The village’s probable origins in the first half of the 10th century and the 16th-century paintings point to different periods. The palace church adds the relationship with Santo Polo Castle to this perspective. Those particularly interested in local history will find several distinct themes to focus on while exploring the village.

Madonna della Noce surrounded by greenery

The small Madonna della Noce sanctuary still stands today just outside the village, surrounded by greenery. It was built following an apparition. This adds another religious connection and setting to San Polo’s churches: while the palace church is associated with the castle, the sanctuary lies outside the settlement in a green setting. When planning your holiday, you can therefore decide whether to focus mainly on the historical connections of the churches or also explore the sanctuary’s history.

This range of themes is also useful when choosing the focus of your trip. San Polo combines a history that probably reaches back to the early Middle Ages with churches from different historical contexts and a sanctuary whose origins are linked to an apparition. If you are planning a trip together, you can weigh these interests in advance and then decide how much of your stay to devote to local history and religious heritage.

Plan for the village centre and your journey

San Polo’s historic centre is pedestrianised. Traffic there is restricted to local vehicles and is limited. At the same time, Piazza Piacentini can be reached by car. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between these details: the piazza is accessible by car, while getting around the historic centre is shaped by its pedestrian zone and limited local traffic. Plan your arrival and journeys within the village centre as separate parts of your trip.

From Rome, take the A1 towards Florence as far as the Ponzano Romano-Soratte exit. From there, continue via Stimigliano and then on to Tarano; San Polo lies before you reach the municipality. Check road conditions before setting out. This route gives you an idea of how to get there, but does not replace planning on the day of your trip.

One rail option is the FR1 Fiumicino Aeroporto–Orte regional line, with a stop at Stimigliano. Check the timetable with the rail operator before your trip and plan onward travel from Stimigliano to San Polo to suit your travel day. Travelling by car and by train offer different approaches to getting there; in either case, it helps to coordinate your journey in advance with your plans for the day.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start with your interests: would you mainly like to explore the village’s history and churches, or would you also like to include the sanctuary outside the village? Also consider whether you will be travelling by car or including the train connection to Stimigliano in your plans. This way, you can tailor your accommodation search to the themes and travel arrangements that matter for your stay.
