Nespolo – Nature, Trails and Village Culture

Church, Mill and Local Tradition

The cultural side of Nespolo includes the Church of San Sebastiano. It was built in 1357 and restored in 1521. The church houses a 16th-century painting from the Flemish school depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The feast day of San Sebastiano is given as 20 January. A special testament to the former use of local resources is the Mulino ad acqua-Nespolo water mill. It can be reached via a short footpath through the vegetation and lies a few hundred metres below the village of Nespolo beside a stream. The mill has a wooden millstone with a horizontal wheel. It was formerly used to grind grains such as wheat, rye and spelt for family consumption. A large stone basin is also attached to the building; in the past, it was used to store water during dry periods or when the stream had a low flow. The mill thus combines a short access route with insights into a bygone form of processing and water use.
