Misericordia brings together a multifaceted religious art tradition, an annual festival, and a cycling tour through the Sabine Hills. For travelers who want to include culture, religious art, and outdoor activity in their stay, these offer concrete themes to consider when choosing a holiday apartment. The focus is the Madonna della Misericordia sanctuary and its depictions; other features include a Roman water system and a route of around 50 kilometers.

Art in the Sanctuary

Architect Angelo Sani designed and built the Madonna della Misericordia sanctuary in simple neoclassical forms. Inside, the space is defined by wall decorations in ivory and pale green tones with delicate gold accents, as well as an altar framed with stucco and bricks. The altar frames a painting with Umbrian influences dating from the 15th to 16th century. The simple building and carefully chosen colors provide a clear setting for the furnishings.

On the central wall of the presbytery is the miraculous depiction of the Madonna with the Christ Child and Saint Anthony Abbot. On June 29, 1890, it was solemnly crowned by Bishop Paolo De Santis. On the right side of the presbytery is the Annunciation, with the angel appearing to Mary; on the left is the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth. Thus, a central devotional image and two scenes from the life of Mary are placed side by side.

The image on the right side altar shows the Madonna with the Christ Child, Saint Joseph, Saints Joachim and Anne, and the young Saint John the Baptist; the image on the left side altar depicts the Deposition of Jesus. Frescoes on both side walls show the Stations of the Cross. The ceiling depicts the reported miracle, showing Lucia Del Bufalo and people from the local community. The subjects thus range from Marian themes and saints to the Stations of the Cross and the story of a miracle.

Feast Days and Historical Traces

The tradition of the Madonna della Misericordia includes two annual feast days: January 23 and June 27. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check locally for the program. The sanctuary is located on Via Provinciale Stazione and provides a specific reference point for finding your way around Misericordia.

Another historical layer can be found in the La Misericordia area near the church of the same name: an ancient underground Roman aqueduct was discovered there. This water system includes a 16-meter-deep well, at the bottom of which two aqueduct tunnels begin in opposite directions. Traces of Roman water engineering thus add a very different chapter to the town’s history alongside its religious art.

Cycling Through the Sabine Hills

A cycling tour of about 50 kilometers through the Sabine Hills passes through Fuori Dazio and Misericordia. The route follows quiet roads surrounded by greenery. Check road conditions before setting out. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh two different priorities: the religious art and feast days are specific to Misericordia, while the cycling tour adds a ride through the Sabine Hills to your stay. Then decide whether religious art or cycling should play a greater role in your travel plans.
