Apoleggia Between Art and Tradition
Accommodation in Apoleggia
Apoleggia offers a cultural experience that ranges from the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo and works of art in the village to the tradition of baking bread in the old oven. In the municipality of Rivodutri, open-air art and guided routes through the landscape add to the experience. This raises a practical question for planning your holiday: should Apoleggia itself be your main focus, or would you also like to include the municipality’s art sites?
Art and Traditions in Apoleggia
San Michele Arcangelo is the parish church of Apoleggia. The mural “Vicino ai tuoi occhi,” dedicated to Saint Francis, is located on the cemetery’s perimeter wall. The village thus brings together two distinct cultural landmarks: the parish church and a mural with a clearly stated religious dedication. For travellers interested in religious art, the dedication and precise location provide a tangible point of interest.
“SPEARS” is a textile spear artwork inspired by local traditions. It refers to the ritual of baking bread in the old oven and was inaugurated at the Apoleggia Belvedere on 16 July 2016. The work thus connects its textile art form with a motif from local tradition. Together with “Vicino ai tuoi occhi,” it creates a contrast between the dedication to Saint Francis and the reference to the old oven ritual. Piazza Belvedere in Apoleggia is considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the municipality of Rivodutri.
Art Routes and Landscapes in Rivodutri
The municipality of Rivodutri includes Apoleggia and Piedicolle, as well as an extensive plain that forms part of the Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile Nature Reserve. Contemporary Rivodutri also broadens the focus beyond a single village: its free open-air museum has works spread across the hamlets of Apoleggia and Piedicolle, as well as the main town. Guided walking routes of around 10 kilometres are organised for Contemporary Rivodutri, connecting the artworks with the surrounding landscape. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the outing; the routes link art and landscape rather than focusing on a single work.
A different perspective was offered by a 2023 e-bike excursion organised by the Riserva Naturale dei Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile. It included a refreshment stop in Apoleggia, with views over the Valle Reatina. Participants could sample local products there. The guided walking routes and this e-bike excursion show different ways to bring art, landscape, and regional products together in an outing; the e-bike activity took place in 2023.
Festivals and a Closer Look at the Municipality
The celebrations in honour of Madonna delle Grazie are considered Apoleggia’s most important patron saint festival. An event listing from 2026 describes the Pizza Fest Apoleggia as an event in its 16th edition.
The Museo della civiltà contadina is located in Colle Macchia, on Strada Comunale Colli di Apoleggia in the municipality of Rivodutri, and belongs to the Riserva Naturale dei Laghi Lungo e Ripasottile. At a painting event in 2022, the submitted works were brought together there in an exhibition. If you plan to visit the museum, check in advance whether it is open to visitors.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can make Apoleggia your base if you are mainly interested in the parish church, the artworks, and local festival traditions. If you would also like to include the works spread across Apoleggia, Piedicolle, and the main town, as well as the guided routes, consider this excursion programme when choosing where to stay. This way, you can tailor your search to the cultural and landscape experiences you are looking for.
