Castellonorato combines impressive traces of the past with paths and natural features that give the place its own character. The polygonal walls date from the 4th century BC and are a reminder of the long history of the fortified settlement. For families and other travellers who want to experience culture together with movement and landscape, the town therefore offers various options for planning a day out.

Archaeology, Church and Local History

An important historical point of reference is the Porta Aurea in Palombara, a district of Castellonorato. The archaeological site was recognised as being of cultural interest pursuant to Article 13 of Legislative Decree 42/2004. The Parrocchia Santa Caterina Vergine e Martire is also useful for finding your way around the town. It is located at Via Capo la Terra 12, 04023 Formia (LT). In the Chiesa di Santa Caterina, next to the main altar, there is a painting by Andrea Mattei from 1783. Those interested in regional history and sacred art can include these stops in their own travel plans.

Castellonorato also served as a stronghold for guarding the Ausente plain. From there, there was an unobstructed view of the border area between Lazio and Campania as well as the sea. In the last quarter of the 14th century, the town belonged to a network of fortifications that also included Castellone and Maranola. These historical connections place the walls and remains of the fortifications within a broader regional context, without requiring a stay to be limited to a single attraction.

The Cammino degli Aurunci and Special Natural Features

The Cammino degli Aurunci passes through Castellonorato on its first stage and continues to Spigno Saturnia Superiore. In the town, the route runs below the castle through a characteristic old gateway. After leaving Castellonorato, it passes the Porta Aurea, which is located shortly after the cemetery of Castellonorato. This also makes it possible to consider the town from the perspective of an active day of travel. At the foot of the Torre di Castellonorato, two enormous boulders lying one above the other are regarded as an exceptional natural monument. This distinctive feature adds a landscape experience to the historical impression.

Tradition and Choosing Accommodation

Folklore al Castello is a tradition that has existed for more than twenty years and takes place on the last Saturday in July. The date may be of interest for personal travel planning if you would like to combine a stay with local culture. Depending on your focus, choose your holiday apartment or holiday home based on how you would like to spend your day: those interested in culture can plan around the walls, church and Porta Aurea, while on the Cammino degli Aurunci, the route determines the rhythm of the stay. In this way, Castellonorato remains a versatile base for individually planned discoveries.
