Tricesimo: Church Art, Castles and Culture
Accommodation in Tricesimo
Tricesimo is known for its church art, medieval castles, a public park and cultural events. The town’s history stretches from its early ecclesiastical origins to an architectural history that can be traced today. For families weighing culture and time outdoors equally when choosing a holiday destination, these themes offer a range of ways to explore the area.
Churches and Art History
The present-day parish church of Santa Maria della Purificazione was consecrated in 1789 and built to a design by the architect Domenico Schiavi of Tolmezzo. Its history goes back further: it was first mentioned in a document in 1234, while its likely origins date to the 7th and 8th centuries. This makes it possible to distinguish between the construction of the present-day church and its earlier history.
The Chiesa di San Giorgio is also one of Tricesimo’s oldest churches. Its present architecture has Romanesque origins dating from the 9th to the 12th century. The Chiesa di San Pelagio in Adorgnano contains an important fresco cycle by Gian Paolo Thanner, commissioned in 1535. The three churches therefore offer different points of interest: the parish church’s long history, Romanesque architecture and a dated commission for religious art.
Medieval Traces and Planning a Visit
The Castello di Tricesimo has been documented since the 13th century. At Castello Valentinis, parts of the medieval complex remain, including a curtain wall with covered walkways, bridges and six corner towers. These specific architectural features bring the history of the castles to life, while the documented mention of the Castello di Tricesimo provides a separate historical reference point.
A visit to the exterior areas of Castello De Valentinis is planned. The upper rooms can be visited by prior arrangement with the Franciscan Sisters. If you plan to visit, it is best to confirm the arrangements and conditions in advance.
Green Spaces and Culture
Parco comunale Luigi Tami “Eros” is a large public green space for leisure, sport and enjoying nature. This brings another aspect of the town into focus alongside its churches and castles: outdoor activities. For visitors looking for more than art and architectural history when choosing a holiday destination, the park offers a point of interest in its own right.
The Estate a Villa Ciceri event series reached its seventh edition in 2025. That year’s programme included two concerts, two author talks with readings and musical interludes, as well as a live book event; the events took place in the park of Villa Ciceri. The dates and programme items mentioned refer to 2025, not to a current events programme.
By contrast, Cjaminade Furlane a Tresesin focused on getting out and about: the completed event was a walking route with five stops to discover the Tricesimo area.
A Historical Connection to the Local Cuisine
The local cuisine also has a historical point of reference: in 1824, the poet Pietro Zorutti praised Tricesimo’s white asparagus for its quality and the purifying properties attributed to it. This is a dated record of how the product was regarded at the time, not a statement about a present-day tradition.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Tricesimo, consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: churches and frescoes, preserved castle architecture, time in public green spaces or a specific cultural event. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates before booking.
