Archaeological traces from the Neolithic and Roman periods, frescoed chapels and activities by the water give Palazzolo Dello Stella different sides to explore. You can focus your stay on history and architecture, or make cycling, walks and a boat trip the main activities. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which of these discoveries you want to shape your trip.

Archaeology from the Neolithic to the Roman period

The Museo dello Stella is an archaeological museum in Piancada, located in the Casa del Marinaretto. Its collections are being reorganized and consist mostly of finds from excavations at a nearby Neolithic village. The layers there have been studied stratigraphically since 1992. The local history therefore brings together finds from both the Neolithic and Roman periods.

The site PdS 010/ UA PALAZZOLO 02, a rural villa from the Roman period, is located in Piancada-Lamarutto. It features numerous mosaic tesserae as well as marble slabs used for flooring and wall coverings. The different materials bring the architectural details of the complex to life: marble was used on both floors and walls.

In Palazzolo Dello Stella, the place name Ciasteòn recalls a fortified settlement on flat land, built by Paleo-Venetic groups to control the crossing of the Stella River. The fortification has been completely dismantled; its memory remains in the name and in archaeological traces. Excavations in Palazzolo Dello Stella also uncovered remains of a Neolithic burial, which is associated with the inhabitants of the village there.

A Roman milestone is dedicated to Emperor Constantine and dated to after 312 AD. An underwater survey in 2021 suggested that the remains of the Roman bridge on the Via Annia in Palazzolo Dello Stella may have had two arches. These traces offer different ways to approach the past: a dedication dated to a specific period and an archaeological interpretation that remains explicitly a possibility.

Frescoes, chapels and architectural history

The Chiesetta della Beata Vergine del Suffragio is known for its frescoes from the first half of the 16th century. Its presbytery is entirely frescoed and has a barrel vault. A barrel vault is an elongated, arched ceiling; the presbytery is the altar area of a church. The details about the painting and architecture thus draw attention to two different aspects of the same building.

The votive chapel Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate in Piancada dates from the 15th century. On the embankment of the Turgnano River, the Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate is a regular destination for cyclists and walkers. Art history and outdoor activities are different themes to consider when planning a trip here.

Il Marinaretto also has a history of its own: the building was constructed and inaugurated in 1936 as a training center for the Balilla Marinaretti. It is currently unusable pending restoration work. This limitation is worth factoring into your plans if you are interested in this historic site.

Cycling, walking and a boat trip

The Stella Cycle Route R024 leads to the Stazione Ferroviaria Palazzolo dello Stella railway station as a route waypoint. In some sections, it follows flat asphalt roads shared with other traffic, well-maintained gravel paths and cycle paths. Surfaces may change with maintenance, and waypoint details may change with route revisions. So, before setting out, check the current route and surface conditions. On the Turgnano embankment, the Chiesetta di Sant’Antonio Abate is one of the regular destinations for cyclists and walkers.

Another way to experience the surroundings from the water is to take a small boat from the mouth of the Stella River to the small, picturesque harbor of Rivarotta. The cycle route, walk and boat trip offer different ways to spend time outdoors. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Palazzolo Dello Stella, it is best to base your choice on the activities you want to focus on: archaeological sites and chapels, or outdoor exercise and activities on the water.
