In Forni di Sotto, geological trails, a challenging mountain hike and traces of a turbulent local history lie close together. This makes the village interesting for travellers who want to shape their holiday around nature and culture: one circular trail explores a former lake landscape, while churches, fountains and visible ruins leave their own historical marks.

Nature Park and Trails with Different Characters

The easternmost part of the Friulian Dolomites Nature Park extends into Forni di Sotto. The areas south of the village, beyond the Tagliamento, are separate from it; they, too, are part of the nature park. An exhibition at the nature park visitor centre in Forni di Sotto explores the park’s nature, different types of forest, and the relationship between people and forests. Landscape and human use thus offer two ways of looking at nature.

The Sentiero Geologico Paleolago di Forni di Sotto is a circular trail that starts in Forni di Sotto. It links the lake sediments of the Forni di Sotto palaeolake with the Aghe da la Puze spring. Its geological focus gives the trail a different character from a hike centred primarily on summits and mountain panoramas.

The blue trail, which links Bosco Incantato and Villaggio degli gnomi, adds a fairy-tale touch. Villaggio degli gnomi is a trail inhabited by little forest dwellers. The names of the two trails set a whimsical tone, quite unlike the challenging character of a mountain hike.

From the village, the Monte Chiarescons da Nord trail passes through Vico to the Tagliamento ford. This hike is considered challenging and crosses rough terrain; good navigational skills as well as hiking and mountaineering experience are required. Along the way, there are views of the Pramaggiore and Cornagèt mountain ranges. As conditions can affect access, check the current trail conditions when planning your trip. Anyone considering this trail should bear its challenging nature in mind from the outset.

Local History and Architecture

A defining event was the fire of 1944, which completely destroyed Forni di Sotto. After the war, the village was rebuilt around the fountains of its three hamlets. The fountains are therefore part of a local history that tells of both loss and reconstruction.

At the edge of the village, the Church of San Lorenzo features a distinctive portico and a small bell gable. Inside the church is a fresco cycle by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo, dated 1492. The paintings depict the Church Fathers, the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, the Annunciation and various saints. Here, striking architectural forms meet a Renaissance pictorial programme.

The ruins of Chiastelàt Castle are also still visible in Forni di Sotto. Another trace of earlier work is the fully reconstructed cableway of Val Poschiadea, once used to transport timber from remote forests down to the valley. The ruins and the reconstructed cableway tell different stories about the village’s past, without equating their former functions with their present-day use.

For further cultural insights, the Nora Tani Vidoni municipal library offers a different focus. It is located near the town hall and also hosts author events and book presentations. Together with the churches and fountains, it offers a glimpse of cultural places beyond the hiking trails.

Which Holiday Apartment Suits Your Plans?

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay. The geological circular trail starts in Forni di Sotto, and the Monte Chiarescons da Nord trail also begins in the village. However, the mountain hike specifically requires good navigational skills as well as hiking and mountaineering experience, while the Paleolago trail offers a different focus, with its geological themes. If you also plan to explore local history, churches or the nature park exhibition, you can choose where to stay to suit this mix. Compare your travel plans before deciding on a holiday apartment.
