Flaibano: Churches and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Flaibano
Discover Flaibano through its churches and named cycling routes. Its historical traces range from a mention of Sant’Odorico on 20 October 1154 to the almost complete reconstruction of the parish church of Beata Vergine Annunziata between 1922 and 1933. There are also precisely documented artistic and commemorative details, as well as two cycling routes with different focuses. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you find the right place in Flaibano for your travel interests.
Churches with different traces of time
On 20 October 1154, Sant’Odorico is mentioned as a monastery or a regular foundation of Augustinian Canons under the leadership of an abbot; the church later became an abbey church. The history of the building therefore reaches back to the Middle Ages. For travellers interested in the development of church institutions, Sant’Odorico offers a specific historical point of reference.
The rural church of San Giovanni Battista in Sottoselva offers a different perspective. Its present appearance dates back to the 16th century, and it is dedicated to the Italian Alpini. After the damage caused by the 1976 earthquake, the Alpini restored the church and erected a monument in front of the building. An altar attributed to Carlo da Carona is also part of its history: of the three 16th-century altars, it is the only one to have survived. Building history, remembrance and a specific work of art come together here.
A later building phase takes centre stage at the parish church of Beata Vergine Annunziata in Flaibano. It was almost entirely rebuilt between 1922 and 1933. Its side portal is the work of Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte and is decorated with sixteen different angel faces. The period of reconstruction and the distinctive portal offer two different perspectives on the same church: the development of its building and a striking detail of its design.
Cycling: two different focuses
“Castellieri in bicicletta” is a cycling route to the castellieri of Flaibano and its surroundings. “The Stone Houses cycle circuit” is designed as a circular route starting in Codroipo: it heads towards San Lorenzo–Coderno and Flaibano; on the return, it goes via Sant’Odorico, Turrida and Gradisca back to Codroipo. Sant’Odorico thus connects Flaibano’s church history with a section of this cycling circuit.
The two routes differ mainly in their theme and itinerary: one focuses on the castellieri in the Flaibano area, while the other is a circular ride through several named places. When planning, you can choose the focus that best suits your stay, without combining the two options into a single route.
