Sacile: Culture and River Landscape along the Livenza
Accommodation in Sacile
Sacile combines historic buildings with the Livenza River, offering different options for planning your trip. You can focus on culture and architecture, include walks along the water, or experience the river on a guided boat trip and by kayak on selected sections. This combination is also helpful when choosing a holiday apartment: the deciding factor is whether you would rather spend your days sightseeing in the town, walking along the riverbanks or enjoying active experiences on the water.
Historic Sacile between the Town Centre and the Livenza
The historic centre of Sacile developed in close relationship with the Livenza River. The former landing place for merchant ships, known as “portus Sacili”, corresponds to today’s square. This connection between the town’s history and the water shapes the character of the place, without requiring you to limit your trip to a single activity.
One of the town’s notable buildings is today’s Duomo di San Nicolò. It was built between 1474 and 1496 under the direction of Beltrame and Vittorino da Como. Inside, the cathedral has three naves separated by Gothic arcades on columns. Another historic point of reference is Palazzo Ragazzoni, a 16th-century palace that symbolically represents Sacile’s connection with the Republic of Venice.
The Chiesetta della Pietà also features distinctive architectural details. It was consecrated at the beginning of 1616 and has an entrance porch with a double loggia that rises directly from the waters of the Livenza. Those interested in churches, palaces and historic townscapes will therefore find several different starting points for a day of culture in Sacile.
Walking Trails and Experiences by the River
In the area of the Mura e Torrioni, a walking trail runs along the Livenza. A footbridge passes by the tower and continues to Pra’ Castelvecchio Park. The Livenza carries water throughout the year and has scenic riverbanks and surrounding countryside.
The Livenza can be explored by kayak on active days. Depending on the section selected, appropriate technical skills are required. A guided river trip in Sacile offers a different perspective: small boats piloted by experienced staff travel along the Livenza, passing under stone bridges and by the façades of 16th-century palaces.
Those interested in fishing should observe the designated “No-Kill” area. Fishing there is permitted exclusively with artificial lures. The “smorta” di Cavolano is also considered a natural heritage site of great value and broadens the view of Sacile’s landscape.
Getting There and Finding Your Accommodation
Sacile railway station is located on the Venice–Udine railway line and is a junction for the Sacile–Gemona line, which follows the route at the foot of the Pre-Alps. The historic centre is about a 15-minute walk from the station. If you arrive by train, you can take this distance into account when planning your day. By car, Sacile can be reached via the A28 motorway between Portogruaro and Conegliano; the Sacile Est and Sacile Ovest exits are available.
When searching for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first determine the pace of travel you want. For a culture-focused stay, the cathedral, palazzo and historic churches are the main attractions. If you would like to experience the Livenza more intensely, walking trails, a guided river trip or – with the appropriate technical skills – a kayaking tour offer different possible focuses. A guided tour of Sacile is available in Italian and English.
Art and Further Discoveries
The Galleria d’Arte Moderna Pino Casarini is temporarily closed due to extensive renovation work on the building. Its collection comprises 68 paintings, 150 stage-design sketches for the Arena di Verona, as well as 800 drawings and preparatory studies. This information is important for your planning if you would like to combine Sacile with a particular interest in art: the collection is currently accompanied by the temporary closure of the building.
If you would like to compare other places in addition to Sacile, you can visit the pages for La Croce, Pravisdomini, Sesto Al Reghena, Azzano Decimo, Cimolais, Tramonti di Sotto, Caneva and Andreis.
