Maniago: Blacksmithing, Castle Ruins and Trails on Monte Jouf
Accommodation in Maniago
Maniago combines the history of metalworking with trails on Monte Jouf, striking castle ruins, Friulian architecture and its own culinary tradition. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Maniago can therefore choose the town according to their preferred travel pace: culture and local history are just as accessible as active days on the mountain slopes or arrival via the daily Treno+Bici service.
Blacksmithing and Unusual Collections
The Museo dell’Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie gives Maniago’s craft tradition a particularly tangible presence. The collection comprises around 10,000 tangible and intangible historical and scientific objects and is owned by the Municipality of Maniago. The museum is housed in the former large industrial complex of Co.Ri.Ca.Ma. (Coltellerie Riunite di Caslino e Maniago), which began operating in 1907.
The exhibition tour traces the history of metalworking in Maniago, from the first water-powered forges along the channel diverted from the Cólvera stream in 1453 to today’s industry and metalworking. Ruote al Lavoro offers another perspective: more than 150 bicycles from the 19th and 20th centuries are displayed in a former cutlery workshop. This means that a stay in Maniago can also be explored through different forms of craftsmanship, technology and everyday history.
The historical theme is also represented by the Centro Visite del Castello di Maniago. This multifunctional space is intended for educational, cultural and tourism activities aimed at communicating, enhancing and promoting the history of the castle and the surrounding area.
Castle Ruins, Cathedral and Trails on Monte Jouf
A walk of around ten minutes from the centre of Maniago leads to the ruins of Castello di Maniago on Colle di San Giacomo. The route there complements museum visits with time spent at a historic site. In the town itself, the Duomo di San Mauro, dedicated to the holy martyr Saint Maurus, is a late Gothic example of Friulian architecture; it was built in 1488.
For active days, the slopes of Monte Jouf offer a range of named activities: mountain biking, trekking, downhill, Nordic walking and trail running can all be enjoyed there. As part of the Curati con Stile project, 29 different routes to the summit of Monte Jouf have also been designated. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between cultural sightseeing and a stay focused more strongly on trails and sporting opportunities on the mountain, without equating the different activities with one another.
Another historical name is Par Crous. In Andreis, Barcis and Maniago, it refers to walking along the ancient mule track over Forcella La Croce, which connected Valcellina with the Maniago plain. Those interested in old routes through the landscape will find an additional gateway to the region’s history here.
Local Flavours and Practical Orientation
Pitina is also part of the region’s identity: Maniago is one of the mountain municipalities authorised to produce this speciality. Together with the blacksmithing tradition, this creates a townscape in which craftsmanship, mountain surroundings and culinary culture stand closely alongside one another.
Maniago can be reached daily via the Treno+Bici service on the Sacile–Maniago railway line. This may play a role when choosing your accommodation if you would like to combine your journey with cycling. When looking for a holiday apartment, also consider whether you want to give greater weight to cultural destinations around the centre or to activities on Monte Jouf. In this way, your choice of location is guided by the focus of your planned holiday and not just by the town’s name.
Discover Maniago According to Your Own Travel Theme
Since 2002, Coltello in Festa has celebrated Maniago’s blacksmithing tradition. The 22nd edition was announced for 29 and 30 August 2026; exhibitions by master cutlers, guided tours to discover old and new customs, and specialities to taste were planned. The date of 29 and 30 August 2026 has now passed, while the museums, castle ruins, cathedral and Monte Jouf combine different enduring themes for a trip to Maniago.
