Fossalon di Grado combines an agricultural landscape with the distinctive natural setting of Valle Cavanata. The area belongs to the municipality of Grado and was created in the first half of the 20th century through land reclamation. Those wishing to combine a trip with nature observation, cycling routes and regional impressions will find a peaceful starting point here for a variety of holiday activities.

Wetland with a distinctive landscape character

The Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve is located in Fossalon di Grado, covers 341 hectares including 67 hectares at sea, and was established in 1996. Valle Cavanata is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It is also part of the Natura 2000 network, both as a Site of Community Importance and as a Special Protection Area.

The landscape of the Valle da pesca includes bodies of water and canals. Between them are periodically flooded sandbanks and small islands. As a result, open water areas, shoreline zones and vegetated sections alternate. Roe deer find shelter in the dense Averto forest, which is predominantly characterised by elm trees; the forest also serves as a refuge for waterbirds.

Four paths for different discoveries

The Valle Cavanata Regional Nature Reserve has four visitor paths: the Bosco Averto path, the Centro visite path, the del mare path and the della valle path. The approximately 500-metre-long Percorso del Centro visite is a footpath with two observation posts. At the visitor centre, you can borrow binoculars free of charge. Birds can be observed at the Osservatorio Sabbia along the Percorso della valle.

The Percorso della valle is approximately 1,800 metres long, begins in the courtyard of the visitor centre and runs along the northern part of the Valle da pesca. The Percorso del Bosco Averto runs along the Averto forest. Depending on your interests, this allows you to choose between bodies of water, birdwatching and woodland landscapes without combining the different paths into a single route.

Those who prefer to travel by bicycle can include the Percorso del mare in their plans. It begins at the visitor centre car park and is 3,200 metres long as far as the gate by the sea; it is preferably travelled by bicycle. On clear days, the Gulf of Trieste and part of Istria can be seen from the sea embankment. The Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve is also the starting point of the cycle tour.

Orientation and getting to the area

For arrival by bus, the FOSSALON Via Grado (Madonnina) stop provides a specific point of reference: from there, it is approximately 150 metres on foot to the Valle Cavanata Nature Reserve. The fourth stage of the Cammino Via Flavia reaches the coastal part of the protected area via a raised combined cycle and footpath. A bridge over the Canale di Primero, built after the Second World War, ended Fossalon’s partial isolation from Grado.

If you prefer short observation paths, the Percorso del Centro visite offers a manageable route. For longer explorations, the approximately 1,800-metre-long della valle path and the 3,200-metre-long Percorso del mare are available. Those wishing to compare different destinations when looking for accommodation can also include Grado Pineta in their travel plans alongside Fossalon di Grado.

Agriculture and regional specialities

Fossalon is shaped by more than just wetlands and paths. Local farms produce fruit, vegetables and dairy products. Asparagus is also part of the local tradition: Fossalon di Grado hosted the 38th Festa degli Asparagi, which celebrated asparagus with food, music and tradition. At the Festa degli asparagi di Fossalon, the vegetable could be sampled at food stalls set up especially for the event.

The Riserva Naturale Foce dell’Isonzo, including the Caneo area and the Isola della Cona, is also located nearby. It covers 2,400 hectares and extends along the final 15 kilometres of the Isonzo River. This makes it possible to extend travel plans beyond Valle Cavanata to different wetlands and landscape experiences.

Which holiday apartment suits your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Fossalon di Grado, your preferred daily rhythm should be the deciding factor. Nature observation, the paths of Valle Cavanata and the agricultural surroundings favour travel plans centred on landscape and activity. Those wishing to include cycling tours can take the Percorso del mare and the Cammino Via Flavia into account. For varied interests, the combination of observation posts, woodland paths, Valle da pesca and regional agriculture offers several different approaches to excursions.
