Discover Doberdò Del Lago: Karst Lake, Nature and History
Accommodation in Doberdò Del Lago
Doberdò del Lago combines an unusual karst landscape with trails through forests, traces of bygone eras and memorial sites along the Isonzo. At its heart lies Lago di Doberdò, one of the few examples of a karst lake in Europe. Those looking to combine nature observation, outdoor activity and history on their trip will find a range of options here for planning their days.
Karst Lake, Forest and Nature Reserves
The circular trail from Doberdò leads through a black pine forest planted on the karst around 1850. Another path to Lago di Doberdò runs through the forest to a viewing platform. From there, you can observe the lakeside flora up close; with a little luck, you may spot geese and ducks. Birdwatching is also possible in the Riserva Naturale Laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa.
The Gradina Visitor Centre, just outside Doberdò, offers a useful starting point for exploring the area. The circular trail through the Laghi di Doberdò e Pietrarossa nature reserves begins there. The centre houses a historical and natural history museum with a tactile and audio tour covering the cultural history, vegetation, wildlife and nature conservation of the karst. The museum also covers prehistory and the First World War, and displays original finds.
Historic Trails with Different Focal Points
Several trails make the landscape accessible through tangible historical traces. The Sentiero della strada romana is a short circular trail around the depression in front of Devetachi. Along the way are remains of a Roman road and two military cemeteries from the First World War. The Sentiero delle trincee begins in Palchisce, passes well-preserved trenches on the opposite hill and returns to the starting point via Micoli and the old postal road.
The Sentiero della grande guerra begins in Bonetti and follows the old road towards Opatje Selo almost as far as the border. It then leads to the highest point of the Vallone, which lies at an elevation of 208 metres and features a machine-gun position from the Second World War. The trail then descends to Ferletti along a military road built during the First World War. The Sentiero del Castelliere also begins in Bonetti, passing the present-day customs barracks site and the SS 55 on its way to the Castelliere before returning via a steep path.
The Strada dei borghi carsici also connects the landscape with a culture of remembrance. It leads to Visintini, where military cemeteries are accessible, and passes a military chapel. The Sentiero dell'antica strada postale begins in Palchisce, follows the old postal road via Micoli and Berne towards Issari, and returns to the starting point. For cyclists, the Great War Ring is an option: in Doberdò del Lago, a short detour to the lake of the same name is possible; the route runs mainly along paved minor roads without traffic and on cycle paths.
Culture, Memorial Sites and Views
Casa Cadorna was built in 1916 and restored in 1977. From Doberdò, the building can be reached on foot or by mountain bike via CAI Trail 77 and offers panoramic views of Lago di Doberdò. Castellazzo is a prehistoric, protohistoric and Late Roman settlement on the southeastern slope of the hill of the same name. The hill rises 158 metres above sea level above nearby Lago di Doberdò. The visit begins at the car park of the Gradina Visitor Centre and Museum, about 2 kilometres from Doberdò del Lago.
In Visintini, the Hungarian Chapel commemorates Hungarian soldiers who fell in the battles along the Isonzo during the First World War. Its foundations were laid in the first months of 1918; after restoration, the building was blessed and inaugurated on 29 May 2009. Doberdò del Lago also has a memorial to Slovenian soldiers who fell on the Isonzo Front between 1915 and 1917. It stands inside the surrounding wall near the car park.
Choosing the Right Base

If you are interested in archaeology, the route leads to Castellazzo; those wishing to explore the history of the First World War in greater depth can choose between trenches, military roads, cemeteries and memorials. For a cycling trip, the Great War Ring offers a separate way to explore the landscape on paved minor roads and cycle paths.
