Talamello – Frescoes, Caciotta and Woodland Walks
Accommodation in Talamello
Talamello combines impressive artistic heritage with a distinctive cheese-making tradition and wooded paths in the Valmarecchia. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in a place that brings together culture, regional specialities and walks, you will find a variety of reasons to plan a trip here. You can choose the sights and experiences according to your personal interests.
Art and history in Talamello
One of the area's special cultural monuments is La Cella. The votive chapel was commissioned in 1437 by Bishop Giovanni Seclani and is completely decorated with frescoes by Antonio Alberti of Ferrara. Antonio Alberti was one of the best-known painters of his time. The frescoes include scenes of the Annunciation, the enthroned Madonna, the Adoration of the Magi and the Presentation in the Temple. There are also two rows of saints, with six men and six women, as well as the four Evangelists and the Church Fathers.
The 17th-century parish church of San Lorenzo also preserves a valuable work of art: a 14th-century crucifix painted in 1300, attributed to Giovanni da Rimini. Several sights are close to one another in the old town. For guided tours of the artistic monuments, you can contact the Museo-Pinacoteca Gualtieri or the Municipality of Talamello.
The Museo-Pinacoteca Gualtieri is housed in the former Teatro Amintore Galli, which was previously a medieval church dedicated to Sant'Antonio Abate. The collection comprises more than 60 works donated to the municipality between 2000 and 2008 by Fernando Gualtieri, an internationally renowned artist with roots in Talamello. On display are oil paintings on canvas, including still lifes, as well as oil and pencil portraits. This makes the museum a distinct focus for a culturally oriented stay.
Caciotta and autumn events
The Caciotta cheese typical of the area is stored and matured in pits carved into the sandstone rock on which the town was founded. After three months of ageing, it is known as L'Ambra di Talamello. At the L'Ambra di Talamello event, you can watch the “sfossatura” of the cheese as early as the morning; it has matured for more than three months in specially designated pits. The event takes place on two Sundays in November. Along the town's streets, food stalls offer various typical quality products from all over Italy.
Another seasonal highlight is the Fiera delle Castagne della Valmarecchia, held in Talamello in October. October also brings chestnut festivals in both valleys, with Talamello and Montefiore Conca as their centres, as well as guided tours and chestnut-gathering activities.
Woodland paths and travel planning
For outdoor activities, a wooded walk from Talamello to Monte Pincio passes through chestnut trees, pines and dense undergrowth and offers views over the Valmarecchia. The woods around Talamello, with their chestnut trees, pines and abundant undergrowth, are also suitable for short hikes.
For travel planning, START Romagna's route 162 is relevant. It runs from Rimini to S.Agata Feltria and serves Talamello, with stops at Talamello and Talamello-Scuole. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether artistic monuments, the Caciotta tradition, autumn events or the wooded surroundings should be the main focus.
