San Leo combines a mighty limestone crag with a multifaceted cultural and architectural history. Steep, almost vertical sides make the crag stand out as a natural fortress. At the Fortezza, in the Palazzo Mediceo, in churches and at the Museo dell'Arte Sacra, visitors encounter different chapters of the town's history; walking and cycling routes add further appeal. When planning your trip, it is worth first deciding what interests you most: architecture and history, sacred art, or scenery and outdoor activities.

Cliffs, the Fortezza and Architectural History

The mighty limestone crag of San Leo has steep, almost vertical sides and forms a natural fortress. The Fortezza di San Leo tells the story of its various historical functions: from 1631, it was converted into a prison. The visitor route includes an area devoted to Cagliostro and leads to Cagliostro's cell. The redesigned route was announced on 29 July 2026.

A closer look at its architectural history leads to the medieval keep. In 1479, Francesco di Giorgio Martini extensively redesigned it on behalf of Federico da Montefeltro. This transformation of the keep and its later conversion into a prison, beginning in 1631, mark different chapters in the history of the Fortezza.

Churches and Sacred Art

Religious architecture offers two distinct points of interest. The Cathedral of San Leone is an important monument of Romanesque-Lombard architecture in Montefeltro. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is considered the oldest religious monument in Montefeltro. Visitors interested in sacred architecture will find both a specific architectural designation and a building of particular significance in the region's religious history.

The Museo dell'Arte Sacra is located in the Palazzo Mediceo, where it was established in 1996. It presents religious art in chronological order, from the 8th to the 18th century. This chronological arrangement invites visitors to explore the collection across several centuries rather than simply view it as a series of individual works.

The Palazzo Mediceo is also a historic building in its own right. It was built between 1517 and 1523 on behalf of the Republic of Florence to house the governor of San Leo and Montefeltro. The building thus brings together the history of the governor's residence and the museum's later establishment.

Scenery and Routes

Those wishing to focus on the scenery will find it at the Fonte di San Leone. It lies in a forest overlooking the Marecchia River valley and can be reached via the path around the crag, known as the “Giro di San Leone.” There are also paths through the valley and around the Fortezza near San Leo. Conditions on individual routes may vary; check locally for information.

Several cycling routes are available, running across slopes and through scenic landscapes to distinctive places associated with history, art and culture. Check local conditions on the cycling routes before planning your trip around them. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your visit: buildings and collections on the one hand, routes and scenery on the other.

These differences can also help guide your search for a holiday apartment in San Leo. Consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on architecture and sacred art or on cycling routes and scenery. This will help you decide what kind of trip you want before narrowing down your accommodation options.
