Discover Montefiore Conca
Accommodation in Montefiore Conca
Montefiore Conca combines medieval character, sweeping views and vibrant traditions. Those wishing to combine a trip with culture, walks and local culinary delights will find many different ways to shape their own plans here. The Rocca, the walled village and the hilly landscape of the Valconca are particularly defining features.
Rocca, village and sweeping views
The Rocca di Montefiore Conca stands on a promontory. On clear days, the view extends along the coast from Fano to Ravenna. The Borgo di Montefiore Conca also lies on one of the highest hilltops in the Valconca and offers expansive views of the coast and the lower valley. This location gives the town its distinctive spatial character: the landscape is not merely a backdrop but accompanies the walk through the town and its surroundings.
With its houses arranged around the castle, the village preserves a medieval appearance. The historic centre is enclosed in a semicircle by walls and old towers. A short walking path runs along these walls. Near Porta Nova, the path climbs up to the park, which can also be reached from below the Rocca. This allows you to explore the town at a leisurely pace and combine historic features with a short walk outdoors.
Churches and art from several centuries
One cultural highlight is the parish church of San Paolo. It dates from the 12th century, while its elegant white-stone portal dates back to the late 13th century. The high altar features the panel depicting the Madonna della Misericordia and Saints, recently attributed to Bernardino Dolci.
The Chiesa dell’Ospedale della Misericordia is also part of the town’s history. It was built between 1470 and 1474 as part of a small hospice for pilgrims. The church preserves a recently restored fresco cycle attributed to Bernardino Dolci or his workshop. The Santuario della Madonna di Bonora, by contrast, leads back to an older tradition: in his will, drawn up in 1409, the hermit Ondidei di Bonora bequeathed his possessions and the cell containing the image of the Madonna del Latte to the Franciscan Tertiaries.
Festivals, trails and local culinary delights
Montefiore Conca also reveals its traditional character through recurring festivals. For centuries, a dramatic procession has been held on Good Friday, involving masked members of the confraternities, the Cyrenian carrying the cross, Roman soldiers and angels. Rocca di Luna takes place every year during the week of the July full moon as a three-day festival featuring theatre, music, poetry, art and entertainment.
In October, the Chestnut Festival invites visitors every Sunday to enjoy chestnuts prepared in various ways, a food market, music, dancing, performances and wine. Montefiore Conca is also known for its olive oil production; the oil is considered full-bodied and distinctive in flavour. Those who enjoy discovering regional cuisine can make these culinary impressions a focus of their trip.
For active days, numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails pass through the surrounding cultural landscape, with both wild and cultivated areas. Big Bench #310 can be reached from Via Forca via an approximately 700-metre-long footpath on CAI 043 or CAI 043A and offers views of the Valconca and the Romagna Riviera. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you would like to make the historic centre, the viewpoints, the trails or one of the festival dates the focus of your stay.
