Castelleale: A fortified Malatesta estate
Accommodation in Castelleale
Castelleale combines the character of a small rural settlement of medieval origin with significant Gothic architectural remains. At the heart of the town’s history is a fortified Malatesta estate, founded by Bishop Leale Malatesta in 1388. Together with Agello, Castelleale is one of the best-preserved examples of this type of estate in the Rimini area. The site therefore offers a clear cultural focus: its history of foundation, medieval fortifications and different architectural forms can all be considered together at a single complex.
Malatesta history and the fortified complex
Leale had his residence built in Castelleale and dictated his last will there; he also died there in 1400. His residence, will and death connect the estate to Leale Malatesta and add a personal historical perspective to its architectural history.
Courtyard, walls and gates
At the beginning of the 15th century, the fortified settlement was arranged around a square courtyard. It was surrounded by a high, crenellated wall, a massive tower and a moat. The complex can thus be imagined as a clearly structured place: the courtyard formed its spatial centre, while the wall, tower and moat defined its fortified perimeter. This layout shows how the inner space and defensive structure belonged together.
The historic entrance was on the south side and led over a drawbridge to the associated gates. The surviving gates from the 15th century were restored by the municipal administration. Their shapes distinguish two entrances: the carriage gate had a pointed arch, while the smaller pedestrian gate had a trefoil arch. A pointed arch tapers to a point at the top; the outline of a trefoil arch is defined by three curved lobes. Comparing them makes the different gate shapes easy to picture.
Other details also reveal the history of the buildings. On the exterior, you can see 14th-century walls and arches, as well as old windows with stone surrounds. A 15th-century dedication plaque made of Istrian stone is visible on Bishop Leale’s residence. The parish church of Castelleale is built against the fortification walls; it was restored at the beginning of the 17th century. The windows, arches, plaque and church complement the gates with a range of architectural and historical details.
Hillside setting and directions
Castelleale is located on a hill. Contemporary chronicles praised the hill’s good fields and vineyards. A route described in a tourist guide reprinted in 2017 leads from Croce di Montecolombo along a side road through the valley of the Rio di Mordano and over the Ponte Scaricalasino to Castelleale. If you choose this route, check current road conditions before setting off.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide what you want your trip to focus on: should Castelleale’s medieval architectural history be the reason for choosing the destination, or part of a broader trip? If you are planning a wider itinerary, it is a good idea to check the routes to each specific destination separately.
