Reggiolo is a rewarding destination for anyone who wants to combine their trip with historic buildings, vibrant culture, and fascinating local stories. The Rocca di Reggiolo, Teatro Comunale Rinaldi, Villa Aurelia, and Palazzo Sartoretti offer different perspectives on the town's past. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you primarily want to take historic sights, cultural events, or convenient connections into account when planning your trip.

Fortress and religious buildings as defining landmarks

A notable starting point for exploring Reggiolo's history is the Rocca di Reggiolo. Its keep was built in 1242 and is the oldest part of the fortress. The Rocca can be viewed from the outside or visited with special permission from the municipality. This means you can organize your visit according to your preferred travel plans: you can first get to know the complex from the outside or apply for special permission in advance.

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta also represents Reggiolo's historic and architectural character. It was built between 1855 and 1858 according to plans by the Modenese architect Cesare Costa. In the church's Cappellone, a 17th-century fresco preserves a depiction of the Virgin of Pietà. Anyone interested in ecclesiastical art and architectural history will find another distinct focus for exploring the town here.

Teatro Comunale Rinaldi and its long history

Teatro Comunale Rinaldi brings together several important stages in the town's history. Its architectural history can be traced back at least to the early years of the 17th century through a painting dated 1614 by the Parma-born painter Ambrogio Viarana. A document from 1750 confirms that a community theater existed at the site of today's theater.

From 1832 to 1838, Teatro Comunale Rinaldi was extensively remodeled according to a design by the ducal engineer Luigi Sottili. Maria Luigia, Duchess of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla, approved the work. These references from different periods make the theater an interesting destination for visitors who want to see not just a single building, but also trace its development over several centuries.

Villas, library, and cultural events

Villa Aurelia is a rural building complex with an open courtyard in Reggiolo. From the 14th century onward, it served as a hunting lodge for the Bonaccolsi, the first lords of Mantua. It later became the summer residence of the Gonzaga family of Guastalla. Its changing use gives the site a distinctive historical perspective and complements Reggiolo's more urban-style buildings.

Palazzo Sartoretti dates back to the 16th century. Since 2003, its piano nobile has housed the municipal library “Giorgio Ambrosoli”. The public park at the rear serves as a venue for cultural activities and events. This means the site may be interesting for your trip both because of its architecture and its cultural surroundings. The Fiera della Zucca takes place on the third and fourth weekends of September and offers a specific date to consider when planning an autumn trip to Reggiolo.
