Piozzano: Hills, Churches and Cuisine
Accommodation in Piozzano
Set among green valleys, church art and a route for walkers and cyclists, Piozzano offers several reasons to visit. Small rural settlements and scattered houses, mostly built of stone, are part of the landscape, alongside the hills and their sweeping views. Regional cuisine and traces of history also give the place its own character.
Hill country with sweeping views
Piozzano lies in the green Luretta Valley. Across the central hill country, well-tended farmland shapes the landscape almost everywhere, while higher up, coppice woodland predominates. Open agricultural land and wooded hills thus form contrasting landscapes. In many places, roads run along the ridgelines. From there, views stretch across the plain and, on a clear day, as far as the Alps.
The small rural settlements and scattered houses, most of them built of stone, add to this impression. Together with the farmland and coppice woodland, they tell the story of a rural hill country that cannot be reduced to a single viewpoint or attraction. The regional tourism website, last updated in 2023, names spring and autumn as the best seasons to visit Piozzano.
Church art and traces of castles
Only a few remains of Piozzano Castle, Castelvecchio, have survived. The churches in the surrounding villages preserve a different kind of history. Their features include Romanesque apses, corbel arches and portals with elegant biforas. The collection also includes wooden sculptures and valuable paintings. Together, the architecture and artworks reveal several distinct facets of the area’s churches, rather than focusing on a single building.
One example is the parish church of SS Salvatore in Piozzano. Its portal was created by Paolo Perotti, a sculptor from Piacenza. Monteventano has a cylindrical tower keep associated with a 10th-century fortification. Pomaro has a church of Romanesque origin, while castle remains survive in Montecanino. The church of San Giovanni is in San Gabriele. These examples range from religious architecture and surviving castle remains to a defensive structure whose connection with a fortification is recorded.
On the Cammino di San Colombano
Piozzano lies on the Cammino di San Colombano. The route runs from Switzerland through Lombardy to the monastery of Bobbio and is intended as a slow, sustainable tourism route for walkers and cyclists. There are also trekking trails in the surrounding area. This offers different ways to explore: a long-distance route with a clearly defined itinerary, as well as trekking paths nearby.
As of December 2023, the starting point for the Anello di Torre Rizzi circular route was signposted from Strada dei Giganti. Local signage may change, so check it before setting out. This date-specific information is particularly useful if you plan to start your walk at a particular access point.
Discover the local cuisine
One local dish is “Duls e brusc”: chicken, turkey or pork is first boiled and then cooked in a sauce of oil, lard, onions, vinegar, sugar and raisins. The meat is therefore cooked a second time with several ingredients, rather than simply served with a side dish. DOP-certified cured meats are also part of Piozzano’s culinary tradition. Both examples offer a glimpse of regional food culture, showing that a trip need not focus solely on sightseeing.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Piozzano, you can start by considering which aspects of the destination matter most to you: the hilly landscape and its views, the churches and castles, exploring on foot or by bicycle, or the local cuisine. This lets you choose a destination that suits your interests before looking for the right accommodation for your trip.
