Morfasso: Lake, Forest and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Morfasso
Morfasso combines impressive landscapes, the signposted Cammino di Santa Franca and historic sites of remembrance into a diverse destination in the Alta Val d’Arda. The surrounding area includes the artificial Lake Mignano, Parco del Monte Moria and Monte Menegosa, with views over the Alta Val d’Arda and the neighboring Val Nure. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can base their choice of accommodation on whether nature, activity, culture or a combination of these should be the focus of their trip.
Lake, Forest and Views in the Alta Val d’Arda
At Mignano, the Arda River is dammed at the border between Morfasso and Vernasca. This created a large artificial lake, clearly visible from the valley road between Lugagnano and Morfasso. The lake therefore already shapes the approach along this route and provides a distinctive landscape impression, without implying any particular length of stay.
Another focal point is Parco del Monte Moria. It extends over more than 1,000 hectares in the municipalities of Morfasso and Lugagnano and protects the woodland on this Apennine slope. The park is free to enter and open every day around the clock. It can therefore be combined with various excursions when planning a day focused on nature. Monte Menegosa forms a natural viewpoint with views over the Alta Val d’Arda and the neighboring Val Nure.
Higher-altitude destinations are also part of the landscape. The Santa Franca Oratory stands at an elevation of 1,200 meters, about 6 kilometers from Morfasso. Together with the view from Monte Menegosa, it creates a travel experience that combines a waterscape, forest and mountain panorama.
Hiking, Cycling and Active Days
The Cammino di Santa Franca leads from Morfasso to the sanctuary dedicated to the saint. The religious hiking trail takes about two hours and is marked with white-and-yellow signs. Those looking for a clearly described route with a cultural connection can include it as a fixed part of a day of hiking.
The Lama e Menegosa loop trail begins in the village of Teruzzi. You can leave your car there. Teruzzi lies at 1,038 meters and is the highest village in the Val d’Arda. Parco del Monte Moria also offers opportunities for cycling and hiking, including trails starting from the center of Lugagnano or the hamlet of Rustigazzo. In Morfasso, you can also go horseback riding, orienteering, mountain biking and climbing. This allows you to tailor your holiday days to the interests of your group without having to commit to a single activity.
Culture and Remembrance in Morfasso
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is part of the town’s cultural heritage. It dates from the 16th century, while its façade is Baroque. Another destination is the Stele ai partigiani Caduti al Passo dei Guselli. It commemorates 33 partisans who lost their lives in the deadly ambush on December 4, 1944. The stele stands on Strada Provinciale 15, shortly before the village of Guselli when coming from the direction of Morfasso.
There is a historic information board next to the stele. It marks the fourth stage of the Sentieri della Libertà and provides information about the resistance in the Val d’Arda and the events at Passo dei Guselli. The Comune di Morfasso, ANPI Provinciale di Piacenza and Museo della Resistenza Piacentina also organize a commemorative event every year on a Sunday morning in December.
The Right Base for Planning Your Trip
Accommodation in Morfasso is particularly suitable for your plans if you would like to begin the Cammino di Santa Franca directly from the town or focus on the local cultural and landscape attractions. For hiking and cycling tours, the aforementioned starting points in Teruzzi, Lugagnano or Rustigazzo may also play a role. Other routes to the Alta Val d’Arda and Morfasso lead via Passo del Pellizzone from Val Ceno in the province of Parma. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, therefore, consider above all which destinations and activities will shape your trip.
