Castel San Giovanni offers several cultural points of interest: artworks in the collegiate church, Liberty architecture in the central streets, and events focused on chocolate or plants. The town is also located along the route of the ancient consular road Via Postumia and has links to the Val Tidone. Depending on your interests, your stay might focus more on art and architectural history, a particular event date, or the cycling route through the Tidone Valley.

Church Art and Architecture from Several Eras

The collegiate church of San Giovanni Battista houses a crucifix by Giacomo and Giovan Angelo del Maino, dating from 1496. It also contains a carved polyptych from 1448, attributed to Bongiovanni and Giovanni Bassiano de Lupis. A polyptych is a multi-panel work of art. The dates establish a clear sequence: the 1448 polyptych is older than the 1496 crucifix.

San Rocco also brings together different forms of sacred art. The church dates from the 15th century and was restored in 1923. It preserves traces of 15th-century frescoes as well as two valuable wooden statues attributed to Jan Hermansz Geernaert. Frescoes are a form of wall painting, while the statues are wood sculptures; the art-historical themes thus range from wall painting to three-dimensional works in wood.

Santa Maria in Torricella is a typical Renaissance church, also known as Chiesa della Torricella and Chiesa dei Sacchi. The building housing the Verdi Theatre dates from the 19th century. Liberty architecture from the early 20th century can also be seen in the central streets. These points of interest place the buildings in different periods: the Renaissance, the 19th century and the early 20th century. If you are interested in architecture, you can make the different styles a focus of your stay.

Events and Views of the Tidone Valley

At Cioccolandia, maître chocolatiers come together to give visitors demonstrations of chocolate making. The fair takes place on the second weekend of November in the main streets of Castel San Giovanni. Event dates may change, so check them before your trip. Floravilla’s programme includes professional meetings, producers’ market stalls and advice on managing plant diseases. These elements may vary from one edition to another. The two events have different focuses: Cioccolandia centres on chocolate making, while Floravilla focuses on plant knowledge, growers and advice.

Castel San Giovanni lies west of the city, along the route of the ancient consular road Via Postumia, on the border with Lombardy, and serves as the gateway to the Val Tidone. For cyclists, the cycling route through the Tidone Valley is another point to consider: it follows cycle paths, minor roads and some sections of provincial and state roads. If you are planning to cycle during your trip, it is worth bearing these different types of road in mind. The Ethnographic Museum of the Tidone Valley is accessed via the park of Villa Braghieri; check access arrangements before your visit.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can use the reason for your trip as a starting point: would you prefer a stay focused on art and architecture, an event date, or the cycling route through the valley? A weekend planned around an event offers a different setting from a stay centred on historic art and the townscape. If you are travelling with your family, you can weigh the options according to your fellow travellers’ interests—for example, art history, a chocolate event or cycling. This way, you can plan your trip around what you would like to discover together.
